As we say every new season, about this time each year, Hallmark is readying to debut the return of a fan favorite show. A story that introduced us to a spunky city girl, some eight years ago, only to turn her into a determined country teacher, a wife, mother and now, a woman ready for a brighter future. With that, today we look at a When Calls the Heart season eight preview.
In the interest of transparency, I have not watched this show in… years. At least not fully. I’ve seen snippets of episodes, watched a random new season first episode here and there, and I certainly know what’s going on in Hope Valley. But also in all honesty, I have to admit, reading about the show and its happenings feels like enough. I’m uninterested in this as an adaptation and therefore I find I cannot invest in the show. That said, as it’s from Hallmark (which I still love) and I do find myself more invested in reading about the show than watching it, let’s look at what is rumored (and what I speculate!) to come.
Before I go down an Internet rabbit hole seeking details, first I’m going to write the overview of what’s to come and here’s a season eight overview: More surprises and challenges are in store for the residents of Hope Valley. Elizabeth’s relationships with Nathan and Lucas continue to deepen, Faith and Carson must make choices about their future, a new family arrives to town, Lee and Rosemary get some unexpected news, Bill is asked to return a prized possession and the whole town joins in the excitement as another wedding takes place. – Hallmark
*Despite the fact that you likely are bored with the rumors by now; I know I’m always late to the party!
WHEN CALLS THE HEART SEASON EIGHT PREVIEW
1: THE TEASER
Let’s start with the teaser video plastered around social media because this seems as good a place as any. In it, we see an emotional Elizabeth gently removing her wedding band and assume, through voiceover, that she’s now ready to remove it and find her future.
2: MAKING A CHOICE
Given the information we learn in the teaser plus other information floating around, rumor has it, season eight will be the season Elizabeth chooses between her suitors, Nathan (the Mountie) and Lucas (the business man). The opening episode synopsis says “Elizabeth tries to come to terms with how she feels about Nathan and Lucas.” I have my own speculation about who Elizabeth will choose, but we’ll look at that further down the line. In an ET interview, Krakow says we will “have a decision,” and we’ll see Elizabeth move on with her “romantic life.”
Later on, Chris McNally, who plays Lucas further confirms this by saying, “You think it’s going one way and then all of a sudden it goes the other way,” he said. “But then it’s back to the other way. And it’s all over the place.”
Either way, there are lots of suggestions that the writers will no longer keep viewers in suspense and she WILL be making a choice.
3: MEETING NEW (AND RETURNING!) FACES
Another of the “big” things about this new season is the addition of a new family that moves to Hope Valley. This family, of course, has children and so, I’ve no doubt Elizabeth will be in her element helping them learn. Another aspect their arrival is likely to showcase is seeing Hope Valley welcome newcomers.
Speaking of newcomers, Hallmark says while Fiona is “uncertain” about the future, she does want to make Hope Valley her home. Faith is also to return which will force she and Carson to make decisions about their future.
4: THE STORIES
Based on snippets from the upcoming plot synopsis, which are released by Hallmark, I would make the educated guess that Elizabeth picks Lucas over Nathan. From what I know of the characters (and have seen in those snippets), I like Nathan, but find it unlikely the writers will put her with another Mountie. Further reinforcing this is the rumor that Lucas’ mother comes to town which means Elizabeth is a “little nervous.” I mean, any woman would be nervous to meet a potential mother-in-law, right?
Given the back and forth romantic entanglement that lingers, someone “will be hurt,” but according to Krakow, no one will leave the show if she’s got anything to say.
Speaking of romance, no matter what, this show promises to NOT skimp on one thing: romance! Whether it’s the marriage between Rosemary and Lee Coulter; the newlyweds Clara and Jesse (who aren’t “getting along”!); or the ongoing romantic triangle at which Elizabeth is at the center, I have zero doubt this will not lack in the swoon moments.
When Calls the Heart debuts February 21 on Hallmark Channel, and will air every Sunday for its full eighth season.
