A dramady that is exclusive to Prime Video, The Map That Leads to You has merits. But the European drama also isn’t something that seems dynamic.

Taking a trip across Europe is a kind of final, big adventure for Heather (Madelyn Cline). It’s something she’s excited to do before real life sets in, and she settles into and begins that life. Together with her besties, she has schedule, packing in a lot as the trio has the best time discovering and adventuring through places they haven’t ever seen. Then she meets Jack (KJ Apa).
Cool in a fascinating way, he’s a stranger who ignites a spark between them, but he’s also a person who seems to have a mysterious secret.

One of the “moody” kinds of romance movies that almost any streaming giant has in their library, The Map That Leads to You is the latest to wear the dramatic romance moniker. Although to be fair, this one isn’t as moody or deep as another recent release, which is the Netflix title My Oxford Year. With rising stars taking on the lead roles, this is a romance that adapts a novel from 2017. Penned by J.P. Monninger, it has an average 3.6 rating on Goodreads and the film features a familiar director. Sitting in that directing chair is Lasse Hallström, and just be aware, his past work on titles like Nicholas Sparks Dear John do seem to have influence on this.
Speaking of those rising star actors, I went into this more blank than having a fixed opinion on them as performers. Which I think is good. Most of them play their parts really well and others I think don’t suit these roles. As a bit of trivia, Josh Lucas also appears in this, a guy we know from the classic rom-com Sweet Home Alabama. All in all this is a decent flick to watch if you’re looking for something new. Just know that this doesn’t earn points for being a light-hearted movie. What it does have is lovely scenery features plus themes of family strength and friendship outside of the romance.
If you enjoy the recent romance movies making their mark on other streaming platforms then you’ll enjoy The Map That Leads to You.

Content: The film has a PG-13 rating. The girls recklessly drink and do drugs; they make out and spend nights with dude’s they don’t know. There is partial nudity (male backside, and we see a woman’s bare back and her legs as she lies in bed). A couple has sex and we see them in bed tangled in sheets 2-3 times.
