‘Two For the Win’: A Fun Winter-time Rom Com

One of the more popular (especially of late) Hallmark leading men takes the lead in this new winter-y romance. In Two For the Win, Trevor Donovan plays a world-class skier on the mend from a past injury. Justin O’Neill needs to get back on the circuit and start competing again. To do that, he returns home where his manager and he decide he should compete in the hometown race where he’s won some of his best races. Trouble is, Justin is down a coach who didn’t stick with him through the injury.

This is where his best friend, Kayla Green (Charlotte Sullivan) comes in. Once Justin’s coach, Kayla stayed behind to run her family’s ski business while Justin chased dreams of stardom. But Kay is a talented coach who, given the right skier, could make a name on her own. As these two friends work together again, all of these dreams resurface, forcing them both to take a look at what the future may hold.

This isn’t my favorite of Trevor Donovan’s titles, but honestly, I do like some things about this film that the script does right. This is at least the second time I’ve seen Donovan play a professional athlete, which is a role he plays well. In Two for the Win, the skiing sequences, are exciting and keep the pace of this film rolling whereas others might not. (Fun fact, Donovan actually does some of his own skiing, too!) Plus, the contained setting (at a small ski resort type locale) makes things quaint.

One of the best things about this script or rather two of the best things is that the writing gives the characters courage to admit something. Secondly another aspect I appreciate and something that goes a long way in a romcom is no dramatic breakup. This can also be tied to eliminating the whole return-to-encourage-someone-in-the-nick-of-time. I think how this one works itself out is way better for these characters.

Those of us who enjoy Hallmark films will find another one to indulge in while watching Two for the Win. It’s full of “normal” tropes including a secondary romance (featuring an actress from the Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries) and is ultimately a fun romance that deserves to be paired with a cup of hot cocoa.
