The Internet, as it is prone to do, tells us that September 21 is Batman Day. While we don’t really know what this is all about or what it means, and certainly I don’t really have those big “feels” (anymore) for comic book adaptations. Still, as this is one of those silly and fun days, we thought we’d go ahead and grade the Batman characters, just because.

A man who was orphaned at a young age, he was cared for by a servant, Alfred Pennyworth, and becomes a wealthy businessman who has everything at his disposal as an adult. It’s this wealth that allows him to don cool costumes and gadgets all while being a hero and caped crusader for Gotham City. The character is one we like, mostly, though some movies and adaptations feature him as a much darker and more tortured soul than others.
Many men have played him through the years. Some were critically acclaimed and others perhaps not quite as much. I haven’t really “met” all of these men playing the character though I did meet a couple, namely it’s Christian Bale who I remember best, so we’re going to talk about them regardless.
WHO PLAYED the BEST BATMAN CHARACTER
BEN AFFLECK from BATMAN v SUPERMAN
Ah, yes, Ben Affleck. Perhaps the one that received most (in my movie watching years) criticism. Affleck stepped into the shoes in this DC Comics adaptation featuring Henry Cavill (another hotly criticized casting) as Superman. Affleck isn’t an actor I vividly remember in the role so I’m not sure if that means he was just “ok” or simply not that memorable.
CHRISTIAN BALE from BATMAN BEGINS
Perhaps the actor I most think of when remembering Batman is Christian Bale, an actor who plays the “dark” character in Christopher Nolan’s film. Bale does a good job with the role, though whether it’s true to the comic lore or not, this I don’t know. What I do know is, I do enjoy him playing this caped crusader. He has the right kind of mix between “dark” and appropriately suave or interesting to play a character who has wealth and seems to be a kind of enigma to those would orbit him. The film also has high viewer and user ratings on places like Amazon! Bale went on to play the role of Bruce Wayne twice more in the films The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight rises, neither of which I’ve seen seeing as I read they are even darker.

Picturing George Clooney in this role is something I cannot quite do. I’m not sure why since I think he would play the wealthy dude well, perhaps it’s the role of the superhero that stumps me. I did watch forty minutes of this one, and while I am sure it’s all about fun entertainment, it falls into the pitfalls of its filmmaking era which is too much exaggeration. What is fun is seeing Chris O’Donnell as the sidekick.
MICHAEL KEATON from BATMAN
For the first time I watched about forty (give or take) minutes of Batman the 80s film in which Michael Keaton plays the role. The film featuring him isn’t, so far, one I love. It doesn’t really have a nice story flow (although to be completely fair I’m very willing to admit this is probably more because of a distracted viewer) and I didn’t buy Keaton as a superhero. As a nice guy wanting to do good? Well, there I liked him fine. Keaton also returned to the role in the early 90s action pic Batman Returns.
VAL KILMER from BATMAN FOREVER
In my memory, which is limited, the only thing I remember Kilmer from is a western. Tombstone, I think. Though likely I’ve seen him in other things although his role as Batman isn’t one. Tell me, is his role memorable enough to make the time?
ROBERT PATTINSON from THE BATMAN
When all the promotion for this was releasing for this, Robert Pattinson’s new film, The Batman was much discussed. From what I understand, it’s a very dark take on the character and film, which was plagued by delays. The film does have a planned part II and in the end, I think there were many who did quite like the film.
