COZY and CUTE AUTUMN MOVIES TO ENJOY

When it comes to movies, sometimes what we enjoy or our moods change with the seasons. For this Autumn season we’re entering, perhaps we like some cute and cozy autumn movies. Or the kind of movies that feel sort of like a cozy blanket or our favorite oversized sweater. This is what inspires us to seek out some of the movies that fit these parameters.

Since this is a semi-annual list we put together, finding new titles to feature may be a challenge. But sometimes that’s okay, and it’s interesting to look beyond the obvious choices in the hopes we may find some of the titles we don’t think of often or perhaps are underrated. We have lists from 2020, 2022, and 2023, so if you think this one is lacking, you might be right (only because it’s likely it’s on one of our earlier offerings), but also, this year we want to see what else we find.

CUTE and COZY AUTUMN MOVIES

THE AUTUMN HEART

Tyne Daley stars as a mother of three daughters who, after a health challenge, asks them to find the brother who was taken away some sixteen years ago.

Rent on places like Amazon for $2.99

This one is PG-13

AUTUMN LEAVES

I’ve never seen this one, so its title may mean something completely different and not at all indicative of its season, but Joan Crawford features in this 50s flick about a woman who is “middle-aged” falling for a “younger” man with a possibly threatening past!

Then film is not rated, but is likely a normal PG-13 type rating for the era; likely there is the usual style of “sensuality,” and this one sounds like it also deals with some mental struggles, too.

DEFINITELY, MAYBE

Before he was the Ryan Reynolds, the actor features in this 2008 dramedy playing a dad who recounts his different romances to his daughter. It’s not my most favorite romantic flick, but I do think it’s got all the heartwarming feels and a kind of autumnal feel, too.

The film is PG-13 for sexual content and conversation; the daughter asks some questions about her dad’s conquests. There is also some profanity including an F-word.

FAR and AWAY

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in this 1992 film about a young Irish couple who head to America in the hopes of building a better life.

Rent the film on places like Amazon (digitally)

The film is PG-13 for violent and sexual content

HOME for the HOLIDAYS

A quirky film centering on Thanksgiving, the film is about a woman who has no where to go but home to her crazy family when her daughter leaves and she embarrasses herself with her boss.

Rent the film on places like Amazon (digitally)

The film is PG-13 for some sexual content, profanity and thematic elements

INKHEART

It’s been years since I say this, but Brendan Fraser stars in this fantasy adaptation. Beyond this, I barely remember the film.

The film is PG

MRS. WINTERBOURNE

This film has the characters bundled in sweaters and jackets (in certain scenes!) and also has a surprisingly charming and romantic effect. I kind of love it. As a result, we’re including Mrs. Winterbourne which is an underrated gem of a 90s flick. It also features Rikki Lake and a young Brendan Fraser.

The film is PG-13 for some thematic elements, and themes that deal (non graphic) with murder; there is also abuse of deity and at least two uses of the F-word.

MURPHEY’S ROMANCE

An 80s film that probably doesn’t appeal to my peers, this film does the age gap romance long before its current trend. It features Sally Field as a determined single mom and James Garner as an older, widowed business owner.

Stream, at publication, with Tubi

The film is PG-13 for some adult content and references including some sex discussion.

ONE DAY

Pretty sure I only watched this one once, and I don’t think it’s set in autumn, but the concept of this 2011 film with Anne Hathaway just feels autumnal.

Stream, at publication, with Starz (on Apple)

The film is PG-13 for some sexual content and profanity

ONE FINE DAY

Saw this one (probably more than once) years ago, and it was even one of those rare “adult” movies I actually watched as a younger teen or kid. It’s also one I (or my family) bought back when a store like Media Play was in existence and there were VHS tapes everywhere! The Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney picture is cute and all about a random day the pair, along with their children, spend together while juggling their respective schedules.

The film is PG for some sexual content

TORTILLA SOUP

This one is a slow-moving film about a family who is a little bit broken, and the father who is trying to keep them together though delicious food. It’s got its moments and is actually mostly quite sweet.

Stream, at publication, with Prime

The film is PG-13

THE TROUBLE with HARRY

I was chatting with a fellow Hitchcock movie watcher about this one, and it sounds like it’s a bit different from the norm we see from Hitchcock. Seems like it’d be a title that’s more fun (and is described as charming) than anything!

Purchase or rent the film on places like Amazon (digital)

WONDER

A film inspired by the novel of the same name, Wonder is not only imaginative and sweet, it also just feels autumnal. It follows a boy with a rare condition that affects his facial features, and as he begins school for the very first time.

The film is PG
