‘THE CORONER’: CURIOUS CASES LOOK FOR ANSWERS IN BRITISH SHOW

A BBC production, this is another of their British mystery series’ that presents interesting (and sometimes darker) stories, The Coroner gives us competent investigators, gorgeous aerial shots and some impressive guest stars.

The Coroner (2015) BBC TV Series Review

Moving back to a Devon town to begin an entirely new, or rather a renewed, life is now a reality for Jane Kennedy (Claire Goose). Along with her teenage daughter Beth (Grace Hogg-Robinson), Jane tries to balance dealing with her rebellious daughter and her new job. Working as a solicitor and coroner, this is a position that investigates curious murders. Alongside the man who once broke her young heart, DS Davey Higgins (Matt Bardock), Jane works with the police to find the right answers.

Her early case involves a teen boy, which affects her as a mother, but also the boy her daughter is sneaking around with.

One of the many British mystery shows, The Coroner may not be a favorite of those I have seen (there are many I haven’t yet), but it’s still good nonetheless. Just as we would expect, the writing again gives us characters who prove to be compassionate, competent and intelligent. They crack cases in a slower kind of pace (made so I think because of the setting) but resulting from this we see many stunning scenes that takes in the seaside or the “coastal” scenery of the town.

The episodic guest stars rack up some impressive talent too. To name just a few, this list would include Ben Caplan, Florence Hall (Queens of Mystery), Imogen Waterhouse (a household name now) and Lucy Phelps (The Chelsea Detective). These type of serials are fun for this reason alone (and trying to place where we know everyone from), but also further introduces us to the British talent.

The Coroner is interesting. It’s not as compelling as some peer shows, and it only has three seasons, but I’m likely watch them all. There is the set up of there possibly being “something” between Jane and Davey again. At the same time, this is a British show and where American TV would make a mess with this, sometimes the British equivalent leaves that in favor of telling a good episode story (which I respect). Time will tell, but what I do know is the “primary six” actors do stay for all twenty episodes separated by three seasons.

Those of us who enjoy British mysteries will find in this another exciting show to binge watch.

Stream, at publication, The Coroner, on BritBox or Fubo; or digitally rent / purchase on places like Apple TV+ or Prime Video

Content: This one, based only on three episodes, doesn’t have too much content. It’s mostly on par with prior British mysteries. We see the bodies (both at the crime scene with blood and later on an autopsy table where a sheet covers most of their body). Some characters are slapped around (done so in an effort to set up suspects and possible scenarios of the murderer). There is a scene of a couple having sex (episode three) and some minor innuendo. Again, this is based off three episodes and the show rates TV-14.
