‘THE SOUND OF MUSIC’ IS STILL ONE TIMELESS CLASSIC

Classic may be too pedestrian a word to really describe the 1965 film that is The Sound of Music, but it also fits and so we use it happily.

The Sound of Music (1965) Film Review

Trying to fit neatly into the abbey where she is a postulant isn’t the easiest thing for Maria (Julie Andrews). She has devotion to God, but she is also passionate about life. She has more than one love and passion. This inspires her to often be a challenge for Mother Superior as the woman struggles to know how to deal with Maria. This inspires her to make a change. She sends her to live with a family of seven children where she will serve as governess in a long line of governesses who don’t last.

The home is that of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a military man who runs his home the same way he would a regiment. Maria is much the opposite and believing children should be children, she encourages play and liveliness, bringing laughter back into a home that has forgotten what joy is like…

Words like classic seem to suffer overuse, but The Sound of Music also deserves to be put into the classic category. It’s a timeless story that becomes a picture of joy and portrait of family while also being a love story that is difficult not to champion. The wardrobe (the baroness’ ensemble stuns and the wedding dress is iconic) and scenery (that iconic opening though) is also stunning. There are also many stunning scenes, but the “blushing” dance and iconic ‘Favorite Things’ scenes are two that immediately stand out.

Bringing this all to life is the wonderful cast. Plummer is brilliant as the stern Captain and Julie Andrews was and still is an icon we love in many roles. While this story, which is inspired by a real family, reportedly refused to soften Plummer’s Captain, as a story point, his character works. All of the kids, while perhaps never going on to be household famous, are fabulous in these roles and I enjoyed their characters, too.

There is a great deal to love about The Sound of Music. I think this is a film we universally love, even today (sixty years later!). It’s also the type of film we need more of. There’s something for everyone – danger, laughter, romance, music – but the underlying thread is ultimately about joy. The music too is iconic of course including ‘Edelweiss’ and ‘My Favorite Things,’ just to name two. If you have seen this, there is no better time than now to rewatch it for the tenth (no shame here) time. If you haven’t, its sixtieth anniversary marks no better time than to see why this is a film on the favorite things list of so many.

Stream, at publication, The Sound of Music on Disney+ or Hulu; you can also purchase it digitally on places like Apple TV+ or Prime Video

Content: there is really nothing to note. This G-rating musical is very aware of its rating and respects that. There are some kisses and a teen couple makes secret plans to for a future life. But everything is very “G.”
