‘WILD CARDS’ SEASON TWO FINALE RECAP: WHO IS THE BADDIE?

Its fanbase may be small, but the Canadian import Wild Cards has a following. Airing its second season US finale (which has a home on The CW) tonight, the season finale is here to drop a bombshell (or two) leading up to the conclusion of who killed Ellis’ brother, Daniel. This brings us to our Wild Cards season two finale recap. Let’s see what goes wrong (does anything go right?) in this big final.

Titled “Sunrise Sunset,” the episode focuses on answering some questions, but there are also more questions too leading into what will presumably be handled in a third season. This second season picked up immediately where the first left off which was a place where (Cole) Ellis had to find a way to work with con woman Max in the aftermath of her betrayal. Begrudgingly they did find a way to cope and figure out a working relationship again. All of their separate cases and secrets (like the episode seven Captain surprise!) now lead up to this finale where answers(?) wait.

warning, spoilers ahead!

Ellis has been chasing, even if only mentally and hopefully, the killer of his brother. A man whose name he knows but can never find (remember when the spy team from a couple weeks back put the idea in our heads that this is because of a spy in their ranks?). This finale teases or at least suggests a reveal that leads to Ellis’ face-to-face (which we thought happened in the last episode) with the man who murdered his brother. Of course, this man did pull the trigger, but who actually wanted Daniel dead?

Thanks to the teen witness, who his brother was trying to help, now Ellis’ gets a name, and the missing pieces to the puzzle. The problem is, his desire for revenge seems to outweigh his sense of justice. This threatens his entire career and the person he has become, in large part to who his brother was.

Can we just give a brief shoutout to the social team for Wild Cards? The iconic movie poster recreations have been fun!

Best efforts by Max aside, the inevitable face to face is intense. There is some combat between Ellis and the murderer all culminates in a brutal hand-to-hand fight. There for him through this all, even though she has a ticket to leave, is Max, and she’s not about to let him do something without very good reason. The bloody aftermath has Max taking Ellis home, cleaning him up and just being there in his darkest and most vulnerable moment.

Attention then turns to the baddie inside the department and we learn its Commissioner Russo, the woman running for mayor, and the protector of Roman Locke, the man who arranged the murder of Daniel Ellis. Answers are found and arrests made. The cost of closure is Ellis’ job.

To close, and in response to those loose ends (like will Max stay? Or what is going to happen with her and George’s big Ashford score? How about that unseen-but-absent character twist?), this has been renewed for season three (and four!) by Canadian company CBC but so far, there is no word on whether The CW has picked up these two seasons. Time shall tell, and rumor has it, that the chances are relatively high.

Whatever the case may be, I suspect we will see these seasons at some point – plus how can we not see more of Ellis and Max solving crimes, especially now she has a badge, bedazzled and all.
