‘COVER UP’: INTERESTING DASH OF CHRISTMAS NOIR

From 1949, this film is tagged as a noir title, but honestly, Cover Up is a pretty sentimental and wholesome movie.

Cover Up (1949) Film Review

Meeting a pretty girl on his way to a small town, where his latest job awaits him, isn’t something Sam Donovan (Dennis O’Keefe) plans on. But he cannot help the interest he has in this fellow passenger from his train. Anita Weatherby (Barbara Britton) is returning home for Christmas where her parents and impressionable sister await. Sam is here to investigate a suspicious death for his insurance company.

During the day, Sam does his job while his evenings he spends enjoying Anita’s company even as he comes up against more than one curiously tight-lipped local.

This isn’t a film I’d heard of until recently, but it’s a pretty good one. I don’t know how it fared at the box office or if it was well liked, but I do know I enjoyed it. It’s a kind of mystery, yes, but mostly, it’s a warm and cozy film that uses the Christmas season as its backing. With a cast that I don’t recognize and those aforementioned cozy evenings out or sitting in front of a tinsel covered tree, Cover Up is an intriguing mix of curious and burgeoning romance.

I like how things unfold and appreciate the oddly funny moments even if they aren’t the normal raucous kind of humor. If you like other winter films from the era, things like A Holiday Affair or perhaps even Gene Kelly’s Christmas Holiday (which I also haven’t seen), well then you will probably enjoy this.

Stream, at publication, Cover Up with Fawesome; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video

Content: there is nothing to note in this. There is some minor (very minor) innuendo. Some conversation about suicide or murder crops up. Nothing ever becomes graphic. The film would be PG.
