‘POT O’ GOLD’: SEE JAMES STEWART BE INSPIRED BY MUSIC!
Featuring a famous face in one of his final roles (before a break and return in a cinematic classic five years later), Pot o’ Gold is funny, but not a favorite classic comedy.
Pot o’ Gold (1941) Film Review
Owner of a heavily trafficked and much-loved music shop, there is still financial trouble ahead for Jimmy Haskell (James Stewart). He rarely takes cash and instead allows patrons to trade things for lessons or instruments. During his troubles, his wealthy uncle C.J (Charles Winninger) arrives and with him there is a proposal on the table. Instead of continuing to run this shop, Jimmy must come live with C.J Haskell and then join the health food business that has made him a success.
Jimmy goes to stay with him, but mistakenly gets mixed up with the eclectic group of next-door borders who have an ongoing feud with C.J. Of course, pretending gets more difficult when Jimmy falls for one of these Haskell enemies, the beautiful Molly McCorkle (Paulette Goddard).
FILM REVIEW | ‘BACHELOR MOTHER’ IS A YESTERYEAR TITLE SURE TO CHARM
‘POT O’ GOLD’: SEE JAMES STEWART BE INSPIRED BY MUSIC! #Classic #Movies #JamesStewart Share on XDespite the many classic films I watched way back when and even the re-watches I’m enjoying now, I had somehow forgotten that James Stewart was in a musical film (and this isn’t the only one!). Pot o’ Gold isn’t a typical musical, but there is plenty of music and songs, so this counts. While I appreciate a solid musical and love many of the famous ones, I don’t love this genre addition in a film like this. I go into something like this title expecting silly and “screwball” (as is often the term used to describe this era). Though I have seen this one, the music still did kind of throw me off the expectation.

Regardless of my complaining, I did enjoy Pot O’ Gold. It won’t be a title I consider a favorite, but for some laughs and the usual everything-comes-together-in-the-final-thirty-seconds (almost a staple in this era) ending, well, there is plenty of joy. It’s also fun to see Stewart in a role that is a little different, and this is one of his final two roles before he left filmmaking for a while and then came back to make the classic It’s a Wonderful Life. Cheerful and musical, this may be one you’ll enjoy adding to your watch list.

Content: there is nothing to note in this one. It’s all very 1940s “wholesome” and has a PG rating.

Every time I watch Pot O’ Gold, I always get When Johnny Toots His Horn stuck in my head for at least a couple of days lol. : ) Happy St. Patrick’s Day, hope you have a great one. : ) <3
Right? That is SUCH a catchy little song. :)
new to me
This is a new one for me, I can’t recall hearing of this one before. Doesn’t sound like one I’d go out of my way to locate but maybe if I stumbled upon it, I might watch.
It’s cute! I just find the music (in this one) a little distracting. But if you like James Stewart or classics, it’s still a fun watch. :)
