‘ABOUT HOPE’: MORE AN INSPIRATIONAL ROMANCE DRAMA THAN COMEDY

Films like this, as I say time and again, are “hit and miss” for me. They’re either really good or they’re just so-so. About Hope has interesting messaging but does suffer some not-so-great production qualities.

About Hope (2020) Film Review

Finding the perfect girl has been a, nearly, life-long journey for Thomas McKenzie (Justin Ray). Ever since the first girl he ever gave his heart to quite literally stomped all over his heart, he started making a list of “perfect girl” requirements. Today he’s no closer to the perfect one, but he has a vision and this doesn’t stop his mother from setting him up on blind dates! The latest to make her way to the family dinner table is Hope (Christine Juarbe), a single mother recently relocated for business purposes. She also happens to be a good friend of his brother’s longtime girlfriend.

Despite awkward beginnings and with encouragement from his friend, Lawrence, Thomas and Hope begin to spend time together. In time, both come to have a deep affection until someone comes along who just may be his better match.

This is one of those interesting and compelling dramas that has a good heart and love story, but lacks a bit in finesse. There’s just something about the production that isn’t quite the polished one I’d expect. However, as I say, it DOES have a good heart. There are messages of Christianity and sweet montages between our leading characters. There’s the usual misunderstanding “twist” that I think plays too dramatically.

Anyone who enjoys films with a backing in faith will enjoy About Hope. There are mentions of God and doing the right thing. It promotes a message of being honorable while also dipping its toes into a little bit of romance, too.

Content: there’s an implication that an unmarried couple sleeps together. A conversation reveals a man cheats on his wife. Characters get drunk. The film is PG-13.
