‘MY EPIC SPRING BREAK (UP)’: A CONTEMPORARY NOVEL FULL OF TAYLOR SWIFT METAPHORS

by

STORY: Coding is pretty much what Ashley builds her life on. Her goal is to get a prestigious summer internship at a social media company. However over her spring break she learns that she’s not being accepted which dampens her mood. Still, there’s a cute boy she’s crushing on, her dad who never seems to have time for her, her best friends, and just maybe, a second chance at the internship.

My Epic Spring Break (Up), Kristin Rockaway | Book Review

REVIEW: Books like this are my bread and butter. I love light-hearted, entertaining and wholesome contemporary reads. This novel is definitely that. I haven’t read a thing by this author before (have you?), however most of which do have some sort of coding or tech angle. While some will find this an unimportant read to brush aside, I read it as the best kind of comfort reading.

There’s some pretty good characterization in the novel which does surprise me, but there’s not a lot of expansion just because this is a short book. (Also there’s yet another reason to love this one.) The story is short, yes, but it’s also a nice concise little tale that chronicles Ashley’s good, bad and fun spring break week. It makes for a fun setting, and a really swoony scene (or two!) for our characters.

If you enjoy books by authors like Kasie West, then this will have a similar outlook and character feeling. If you’re a fan of Taylor Swift, you’re also likely to appreciate My Epic Spring Break (Up) with it’s full on metaphors and Ashley’s personal relationship with Swift’s music. It’s just easy, fun reading that’s hard not to enjoy!
