REVIEW | It’s no secret that I generally quite enjoy Kiera Cass novels. After reading The Selection, I was hooked in the way of her books being easy, comfort kind of reads. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they usually have some form of royalty in them! Who doesn’t love to read about the intrigue of court, right? The Betrayed picks up immediately after the events of The Betrothed in this duology series.

So I rode into the unknown with doubt in my heart, but my head held high.

Taking the story through, presumably, to the end of Hollis’ journey, I like most of the way things shake out. We see her settle in with family but almost as soon as she does, the secret she learns sends her back to her home country where even more secrets await. The one thing about this book is the final five chapters or so do rush things. The direction the book goes is one way only to change in the final pages in what feels “convenient.” That said, this kind of end (being one that will leave you with a smile) is Cass’ brand and I cannot say I’m mad about it.

If you like prior Kiera Cass novels, then this will be equal to them. If you like uncomplicated and fun royal court fiction, you’ll also enjoy this one. There’s a bit of intrigue and plenty of back and forth moments of drama, but overall, it’s an entertaining sequel to wrap up this duo.
