‘GHOSTBUSTERS: ANSWER THE CALL’: ENTERTAINING BUT NOT MEMORABLE

If you like comedy, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call may be something you’d enjoy. If you like something that’s memorable, this is probably best left alone.

Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016) Film Review

Working on her career and hoping to obtain tenure as a professor is the current goal of Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig). When she discovers that her past ghost curiosity hobby crops up in the form of a book she co-authored, she reunites with Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), her former best friend and co-author. This reunion brings her back into the world of science and ghost hunting. What starts as the intention to bury her former hobby turns into something more permanent when she along with Abby and Abby’s co-worker, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) spy a ghost!

Back when this was a newer release, I did see this. Recently re-watching this, all I could remember is that it gives some laughs. Beyond this not much else. Turns out, there’s a reason for this. The cast is good and as always, Melissa McCarthy is funny; I know her from Gilmore Girls and she’s always a good time for humor. Additionally in the cast is some throwbacks to the original Ghostbusters cast like Billy Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and Dan Aykroyd.  Leslie Jones rounds out the Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and in a silly role, there is Chris Hemsworth. Honestly, I do find him funny in this but at the same time the gender bent secretary cliches don’t all work in the way writer’s imagine.

For me, the reason this didn’t work is that it’s just not memorable. Even with the funny parts, it just doesn’t really stand out. There’s things that make us laugh then there’s things that fit an agenda. There’s lots of, what I would guess, throwbacks to the 80s film which will make anyone who has nostalgia about the original, happy. As a new remake, I don’t think this one is a fast favorite.

Content: there is some profanity and crude humor in the script. There’s some “tense” scenes and “scary” or “creepy” ghosts that threaten everyone. The film is PG-13.
