All Creatures Great and Small, Series Four (2024) PBS Review

Spring 1940 is here and Easter traditions are blooming in Darrowby. Despite the war raging elsewhere, the village stays upbeat and cheerful even as local vet Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) tries to adjust to his little brother being called up. Together with his business partner, James (Nicholas Ralph) who is waiting on his papers, the pair continue in their normal lives as they treat the local animals. James and wife Helen (Rachel Shenton) contemplate the idea of having a child, even with uncertainty ruling their lives.

Elsewhere, housekeeper and friend, Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) contemplates a divorce which goes against her moral beliefs. Then practice newcomer Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) arrives, and upsets the balance of the routine.

The themes of this British series may not change, but it’s still charming and lovely. It’s one of those easy-watching series that makes me delight in each of its few episodes that make up each season. There’s tradition and charm, laughter and love, and so much more. This show hits on so many good morals and even as we enter a darker time (historically), this show maintains its feel-good quality, and with the exception to perhaps one episode, the writing keeps things upbeat. It’s the kind of wholesome TV we may not realize we want, but desperately do. all creatures great and small series four

Easily one of the best British dramas airing on TV (and we have the promise of two more seasons yet with its last renewal bring a fifth and sixth season). The storytelling is solid and memorable and the cast weaves everything neatly together. We come to love every one of these characters and want them all to have only the best. Audrey is wonderful and wise; Siegfred is something of a hothead, but he does soften and learn; then there is the adorable and charming Helen and James. I adore these two so much.

The costuming isn’t shabby at all either, and while I’m sure there are some things more modern than it should be, I actually feel transported to a different time. So many productions seem to modernize things too much. This one doesn’t give off that look. I admire this series so much. As a result, saying more just doesn’t feel necessary.

Content: there isn’t much to note negative about this series. There is some flirting between a married couple and we see them flirt and make plans to have a romantic night alone. Tense moments do play into the story including injuries to animals that threaten them. Animals are stillborn and a horse is seriously injured. The series is TV-PG or -14 depending on the episode.
