‘MISS SCARLET,’ SEASON FIVE FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW: NEW ADVENTURE BRINGS CHANGE
A new set of adventures is ready to befall female detective Miss Eliza Scarlet and in this series of episodes, Miss Scarlet season five introduces a new lead and a kind of rebrand, too.
Miss Scarlet, Season Five (2024) TV Review
Scotland Yard is in a bit of an uproar and surprise with the departure of Inspector Wellington. This not only inspires bad feelings among the ranks, especially for those wishing to have received a promotion, but also for the newcomer taking the role of inspector. This happens to be is Detective Inspector Blake (Tom Durant-Pritchard). A man with an impressive career and resume, Inspector Blake arrives just in time to find the ambitious detective Miss Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) interfering with a murder investigation.
As Eliza recounts what led her to be in a locked room with a dead body, we hear their respective investigations and how they both got to the discovery of a dead body.

‘MISS SCARLET,’ SEASON FIVE FIRST IMPRESSION REVEW: CHANGE AND ADVENTURE AWAIT! #MissScarlet #MissScarletPBS #MasterpiecePBS Share on XThe first episode in this fifth season of is the first of the “rebrand” of the popular Masterpiece Mystery! show. This came about because of the departure of leading man Stuart Martin. While I am one of the fans quite fangirl gutted over his departure (he’s my favorite), I also recognize and respect that William’s choice is the right one. I really appreciate that the first episode still takes time to remember William, and gives audience a sense of (perhaps?) closure on that chapter. While I would love to see him return and have he and Eliza build something (if she decides she loves him in the way he does her), if writer’s aren’t going to be able to return him to Eliza’s orbit, everyone needs this.
But onto the things you’ll actually discover (outside of the usual stunning costumes and production) in Miss Scarlet season five. First impressions, yes, but all signs point to liking Alexander Blake. I really like that he “gets” Miss Scarlet, too. Meaning he understands how she operates and works (not emotionally); he also isn’t afraid to go toe to toe with her (props to him!) and of course, Eliza matches wits. It’s good for her and I think she needs to understand that there should be a give and take rather than her being the only one to receive answers or a favor. Both people in the partnership should be on equal footing.
No secret has been made that Eliza disappoints me in this regard more than once. Still, I think this season is going to be good for her and us. I like to think, based on the little I’ve seen, Eliza will grow this year. I’m also going to forgive certain of her interactions with Blake where I didn’t William because she shares no history with him. I’m also not bothered by the times Eliza “loses.” I think it will eventually aid her in her growth, and I admire that she keeps working hard no matter her stumbles.
Early impression though this is, I did very much enjoy this. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and discovering what else there will be for Eliza and Company. It promises to be another memorable set of exciting for everyone.
Streaming information: Miss Scarlet, Season 5 will have an early streaming release on the PBS App and the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel beginning December 8. The broadcast premiere will be January 12 at 8/7c on MASTERPIECE Mystery! on PBS.

Content: there is nothing to note outside of the normal TV-14 rating. There is some violence and sense of danger, but nothing terrible. We observe a dead body on the floor.
Sincere thanks to Masterpiece Mystery! PBS for the chance to view a screener of this; all opinions are my own and I received no compensation.
Note: if we have more to share, we’ll add more to this review as the season progresses.
I can’t wait to watch the new season – I’m also looking forward to seeing how Fitzroy does with the new detective. Plus, I’m really surprised to say this but Nash has really grown on me and it’ll be good to see more of his character again.
I like Nash just fine… and so far, their conversations are quite interesting. I like how they keep their friendship connection and I think the writers are keeping them friendly rather than teasing “more” which I think is really wise. :) Let me know what you think if you see this season, Lauren! (I do like Blake…!)
Whew! I don’t want more for them, except the friendship they’re building. 😀
Same! I think they have a good relationship as is and I think he challenges her in different ways than William/Blake, which is good. Plus the way they “talk shop” is helpful for her cases/life, and I think he is learning from her influence, too. Or that’s my hope!
