‘NORTH OF NORTH’: THIS NETFLIX RELEASE IS REALLY CHARMING COMEDY

An eight-episode binge release, North of North is fun and a good time even with its cast that may not fall into the “a-list) cast category; they bring the a-list style and talent!

North of North (2025) Netflix Series Review

Doing everything right in her small Arctic town is what Siaja (Anna Lambe) does best. But even this, even her very best is subject to belittlement (from friends and family). Married straight out of high school to Ting (Kelly William) is the town’s golden boy. He’s the one everyone praises. Now as her daughter is in school and learning about independence, Siaja is ready to step out, she wants to find a job. This doesn’t go as plan and Siaja keeps making life good until her husband doesn’t care that she falls into the water in what is a scary experience.

This is it.

Siaja decides she’s leaving Ting and she’s about to make her mark in the world.

I hadn’t heard of this show until I saw someone sharing it on Instagram (shout-out to Ruth; I’ve been influenced). It’s one of those no publicity kind of shows that Netflix dropped as a binge release. The series has a really good cast even being a group that hasn’t headlined their own productions. Anna is really good as is the rest of the cast. They bring emotion and lots of fun to their respective roles. Also, fun is seeing Mary Lynn Rajskub (from 24) and Jay Ryan (from the CW show Beauty and the Beast), too. Plus, Hallmark fans will see Dan Jeannotte guest in episode six. The show does heavily get into the mystical and mythical aspects of the Inuk people.

Funny and entertaining, North of North is hard not to like. It doesn’t reinvent anything because it’s another story about a character reinventing their life, but the characters bring warmth and charm and compel us to want to see more. I like the characters and think that, even the stories that blame one character for the things that have gone wrong, is actually a story where two people contribute to the failing of a relationship (primarily discussing something that happened in the past here).

To close this out, while this isn’t being promoted in the way other of Netflix shows like other popular shows do, this one is worth seeing if you enjoy comedy. It’s easy to binge and deserves to tell more of its story.

Recommendation watchalikes

If you like Netflix’s Virgin River which is small town (albeit a very different setting) or the Renee Zellweger film New In Town, I think you’d find this a solid watch.

Content: The show uses the F-word here and there, but it’s not consistent. We see couples in bed together (end of episode four, episode six/seven). In the first they are naked though the camera doesn’t catch anything explicit and the scene is seconds long. In episode six, the scene is prolonged and plays for laughs. There are awkward positions they end up in (he roleplays with her as a dog); he strips down, she remains in her underwear and then decides to leave before more happens. In the same episode, a woman brings someone home and they frantically remove clothing (this happens in an earlier episode too). Someone, while drunk, shares a passionate kiss with a parent (they don’t know this). The show implies some same sex romantic interest (if this bothers you). The series is TV-14.
