The Hardacres Season One (2025) TV Show Review

Being among the working class means that the Hardacre family knows hard work and what putting in a long day’s work requires. They work together at the fish docks and know no other life but this. When a terrible accident threatens to ruin their life and it appears, returning to labor may not be viable for Sam Hardacre (Liam McMahon), they takes a chance. Unwilling to see his family without a home, he and his wife, Mary (Claire Cooper) take a risk and make a choice that could send them to the poor house. Instead, this new business venture provides them with wealth they have never before experienced and sends them into high society.

As the family, including Mary’s mother (Julie Graham) and their three children, Joe, Liza and Harry (Adam Little, Shannon Lavelle, Zak Ford-Williams) change their circumstances, complicated romances and dangerous liaisons challenges and shape them in this journey.

A series that was hyped months (and perhaps more than a year) prior to it making this stateside debut, The Hardacres season one is one of those shows I completely forgot about. Britbox becomes its home for U.S. viewers, and a second season is already ordered; a season that I also did at one time see will make its way to Britbox eventually. A kind of rag-to-riches story, this is a drama that starts a gray and dull Charles Dickens-esque plot only to morph into a Downton Abbey world of glamour. To be perfectly honest, I actually like the juxtaposition which makes this seem like different eras or stories.

Said to take place in Yorkshire during the 1800s, the production is intriguing. The period piece starts off differently than most and is a bit duller (its “look”) than normal. Still, the pretty comes in with parlors and ballrooms where the swish of skirts adds some life and color. Based on social media, the series isn’t being promoted much. But it is now available on BritBox. It sets up as being one that will have highs and lows, however it promises to be a journey along the way.

If you enjoy period pieces, well, The Hardacres is worth seeing. It’s quite stunning and has more depth than normal.

Stream, at publication, The Hardacres season one (the first two episodes) now on Britbox. Watch for weekly episode drops.
