We return today with another watchalike list! This time we’re looking at what to watch if you like Maintenance Required. The film comes from Amazon MGM and is a romantic comedy that won’t reinvent the genre but is sure to entertain regardless.

To help cure some of her loneliness she strikes up a friendship with a fellow car enthusiast whom she meets on a message board. Soon her livelihood is threatened when she must compete against a big corporate mechanic shop that moves in across the street. The plot takes on a kind of adversarial story from there and is, like I said, cute. It pays homage to rom-coms like You’ve Got Mail. Since this particular plot is probably not often in films, instead we’re going to try to find the “bigger picture” similar plot that focuses on the adversarial love story. 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
Outside of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, this may be one of the most famous enemies to more romance. Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles lead the cast in this William Shakespeare inspired 90s rom-com.

ANYONE BUT YOU
One of the big adversarial romances to enter the romance movie space in the last, what, five years, Anyone but You follows a couple who enjoy a very good and spontaneous first date only for things to take a nosedive from there. They expect never to have to see each other again only to realize they will forever be linked by the love story of people they share in common when this romance leads to marriage. The film has Glen Powell (I saw and loved him before he became the “it” star in Set It Up) and Sydney Sweeney. This is probably a film no one can forget considering the “controversy” surrounding it.
Synopsis: Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell are Bea and Ben, two single people whose initial attraction quickly turns sour after their first date. When they meet again at a wedding, they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple. – Prime Video

BABY DRIVER
Not a rom-com (in fact, some of these aren’t) but this title seems like a must-add addition because of its car connection. The film has Ansel Algort playing a unique character who gets roped into being the getaway driver for a “hardened” gang of thieves. It’s quite an interesting film and is from Edgar Wright (his next picture is with Netflix and is called The Running Man) and if articles about the film is any speculation, the film also is meant to purposely be kind of “ambiguous” when it comes to how you view the ending.
Synopsis: Coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love & freedom. – Prime Video

BOTTLED with LOVE
This is a charming and sweet Hallmark romance (wholesome too) about a woman who places a letter into a bottle. Of course someone finds it, romance ensues, and as they say, the rest is history!
Synopsis: After being stood up, Abbey gets inspired to open her heart in a letter, put it in a bottle and toss it out to sea. Months later, a man fishing discovers it and opts to reach out. Stars Bethany Joy Lenz, Andrew Walker. – Hallmark+

BUMBLEBEE
This may be a little “odd” to add because it’s a sci-fi film, and from what I remember there isn’t romance, but it shares the whole mechanic plot angle and is, in general, a pretty cute title.
Synopsis: Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug. – Prime Video

CRAZY / BEAUTIFUL
This is one I haven’t seen, but the “look” of the film reminds me of Maintenance Required. It’s about a boy who falls for a girl living in a more affluent neighborhood.

LITTLE ITALY
This is one of those more obscure titles I continually saw while browsing Prime Video. Finally, I watched it and can say, it’s cute. It’s a rivalry between would-be romancers only this setting isn’t about cars, but Italian restaurants. It has a Romeo and Juliet flavor, only this contemporary has the happy ending we all want. Emma Roberts leads this one.
Synopsis: The director of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Miss Congeniality cooks up a sizzling comedy about two lifelong pals (Hayden Christensen, Emma Roberts) whose romance is threatened by their families’ rival pizzerias. – Prime Video

LOVER COME BACK
This one has Rock Hudson and Doris Day in a 1961 comedy about two people in a romance that forms under some, well, let’s just say less-than-truthful circumstances.

MINDING YOUR BUSINESS
This is a recent digital release, and while I haven’t seen it, it looks like it really plays up the rivalry between two family companies and the two people falling in love (and maybe apart) caught in the middle of it all.
Synopsis: Desperate to get back to New York, Rachel Carver strikes a deal with her family’s sworn enemy, business superstar Jacob Rush. However, their families’ bitter rivalry threatens to derail everything. – Prime Video

MOTORHEADS, tv show
Also from Prime Video, this dramedy show only earned one season and followed a woman who returns to her husband’s hometown with her two teenage kids. While there, the kids try to fit in and make new friends all while hearing crazy whispers about their dad while also forming a bond with their uncle, played by Ryan Phillippe. For a teen show, this did have the usual “drama,” but I thought it was cute too.
Synopsis: Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is an adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of street racing, while navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school. – Prime Video

PICTURE THIS

UPGRADED
This one ends up being only slightly adversarial but it’s more of a watchalike because it’s a case of mistaken identity movie about a woman looking to try and make professional waves in her art career. During a flight on a work trip, she is accidentally mistaken for her successful boss which sends her into a life she doesn’t expect. What’s most fun about this one (aside from the cute rom-com antics) is seeing Aimee Carrero in a supporting role after loving her in Young and Hungry.
Synopsis: Ana (Camila Mendes) is an ambitious intern dreaming of a career in the art world while trying to impress her demanding boss Claire (Marisa Tomei). When she’s upgraded to first class on a work trip, she meets handsome Will (Archie Renaux), who mistakes Ana for her boss– a white lie that sets off a glamorous chain of events, romance and opportunity, until her fib threatens to surface. – Prime Video

THE WRONG PARIS
This story may not have obvious things in common with Maintenance Required but it does have a heroine who works with unique things in her journey to a career and it boasts the enemy’s trope as this couple has an adversarial would be love story! It’s also quite cute.
Logline: A young woman (Miranda Cosgrove) joins a dating show thinking it’s in Paris, France, but it’s actually in Paris, Texas. She plots a way to get eliminated until her unexpected feelings for the bachelor (Pierson Fodé) complicate her plans. – Netflix Media
