‘HOPE VALLEY: 1874’ IS THE ORIGIN STORY OF ONE TOWN

Before it was a place where its settlers found hope, a tiny town known as Coal Valley become home to new settlers, and their story unfolds in this Hope Valley: 1874 prequel series.

Hope Valley: 1874 (2026) TV Streaming Review

Starting over is what the brave and strong Rebecca Clarke (Bethany Joy Lenz) believes is best for her 11-year-old daughter (Mila Morgan) and her. Widowed and struggling, but resourceful she buys a boardinghouse and sets out across barren terrain to settle on the Canadian frontier in a place called Coal Valley. Hopes are high as they reach their new home only once she’s there, Rebecca finds that the place she pinned her expectations on isn’t exactly as advertised.

Looking to still make a go of this, and really having no other choice, she finds she must rely on the help of people about to become her neighbors, including a rancher named Tom Moore (Benjamin Ayres).

The second show that earns the tag of “spin off” from Hallmark’s staple drama When Calls the Heart (currently in its thirteenth season), Hope Valley: 1874 goes back in time and also has the prequel tagging. It’s been a long time since I faithfully followed any When Calls the Heart drama, but when I do pop in to watch an episode or two, I really don’t feel as though I missed anything. And this isn’t an insult. It’s just an acknowledgement that the show stays the same (as many I enjoy do) and its audience appreciates this.

You should be able to say the same of this show, which I feel certain fans of the When Calls the Heart or its one season When Hope Calls (with Hallmark, the show went on with another network) will surely enjoy. It’s full of familiar network faces (Ayres, Lenz) and also has familiar names like Chelsea Hobbs and Jill Hennessy. So with this strong cast, it’s easy to say the cast does a nice job in this production.

Setting up the place you now love as Hope Valley is sure to sprinkle in some nods to its sequel series and of course, there are stories here that promise strength of characters, and yes, likely some romance, too!

Stream, at publication, Hope Valley: 1874 exclusively with Hallmark+; this March 21 debut is a special episode drop, new episodes will now premiere every Thursday beginning March 26.
