‘THE ARTFUL DODGER,’ SERIES TWO REVIEW: MORE DANGER IN STORE!

Series two of The Artful Dodger is finally back, and in this collection of episodes, we catch up with the gang. But exactly how much danger is everyone in?

The Artful Dodger Series Two (2026) TV Show Review

The law has finally closed in on Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster). His sentence, which is death by a noose, is imminent. Because of Fagin (David Thewlis), Jack does escape, but the escape is not legal. Now, he’s still in trouble and has a two-year sentence working at the hospital, living under Fagin and not seeing the one person he does love. On the other end of that, with Fagin still in his life, drawing him back towards the old life hijinks, the pair are about to embark on a dangerous heist. This becomes a choice that could endanger not just Jack, but everyone he cares about and certainly another choice that will put a final nail in his medical career.

Lady Belle Fox (Maia Mitchell) is still pursuing her own career in medicine and refuses to take no for an answer. She’s also the girl who has stolen Jack’s heart.

Further complicating everything is the arrival of Inspector Boxer (Luke Bracey), a man who isn’t only looking to clap irons on Jack, but also pursuing Lady Belle’s hand.

TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE ARTFUL DODGER’ IS A SASSY AND REALLY CLEVER PERIOD DRAMA

It’s been a long time since I watched part of season one, and I never did finish it in full. All I have to say is, this one is so much fun. I wasn’t sure if or how much I’d like this prior to starting that first season, but I really did. It’s not the kind of show I love binge-watching just because medical shows aren’t my cup of tea, but I do love the characters and the partnership of equals between Belle and Jack. I think the show, most of the time, allows each of them to have strengths that are played as equal rather than one or the other being better or smarter than the other. It’s a small but interesting aspect of the script that I think is wise since I’m all about writing relationships that don’t require the dumbing down of one person.

This one starts right in with action, and its traditional modern flair, which I forgive because I think the “look” feels vintage, so I deal with the music and other things. Onto other things, this second season also boasts stunning costumes in an element that continues from the first season of The Artful Dodger. I love the way this show looks (mostly) period appropriate (the hairstyles! The skirts! The streets!) but also puts a little bit of a modern spin here and there. I think this is one of the shows that does the balance well and I appreciate this.

I didn’t binge the entire series two (it is a binge drop), but based on the episodes I did see of the season two run, The Artful Dodger is bringing another good game.

Content: this show has a TV-14 rating and is primarily for blood and various different medical procedures that may make some viewers a little queasy. There is some innuendo too. Three episodes in, and aside from the darker themes (things still have some humor too), and this is about all that is worth mentioning.
