‘NOT WHAT WE PICTURED’: THE PERFECT ON PAPER ROM-COM READERS WILL LOVE
STORY: Protective big sister is the one role McKenna has to pass off before she can start living. Doing this means she has to see that her baby sister Bobbi gets the most ideal proposal even if her would-be-brother-in-law doesn’t believe he needs the help.
During the latest attempt (after one too many failed prospects), McKenna meets Nate, an innocent who becomes an interloper in McKenna’s otherwise ideal plan. One thing leads to another and through a series of events the engagement ring ends up in Nate’s luggage which sends McKenna on a flight to Tennessee where she determines to get the ring, and get the proposal back on track (just in time for her big new job in a new city opportunity).
The only thing is, plans rarely go as, well, planned.
Not What We Pictured Book Review
The latest from contemporary novelist, Becca Kinzer, hers is a name that many readers continue to love. Much as I wanted to love Not What We Pictured, I was sadly let down. From aesthetics to concept, on paper this one seems to have everything I as a reader would love. But it gets off to a rough and a little harried start (which I realize is intentional) and never really finds its rhythm.
BOOK REVIEW | ‘THE LUMBER BARON’S WIFE’: A UNIQUE TIME SLIP NOVEL
After I got past the first few chapters, I did find the pace, and even found some of the story cute.
But I think I’ve been realizing that I’m not a reader who likes what I’m going to call cozy eccentric books. You know the sort, the ones that have some over-the-top characters who push and love to be in everyone’s life, coupled with other silly antics. I do appreciate the short, concise chapters and do admit that the recounting of the first meeting in a very he said vs she said scenario is cute.
While this book is sure to delight many readers, and the ratings of prior books by Kinzer tell me that this is a me-not-everyone-else scenario, I am sad to discover that Not What We Pictured just isn’t a story for me.
