Hard work is a daily part of the life Emma Harte (Jessica Reynolds) lives. She works as a main at a grand home as a young woman in the early 1900s and finds her surroundings inspiration for the grand plans and goals she makes for what she’ll accomplish in her own life. She also finds herself flirting with first love despite its impossibilities. Choices and circumstances soon drive Emma away where she decides the only way forward is to rise to her ambitions.

‘A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE’: STORY OF PERSEVERANCE THAT WILL IMPRESS. Review of the #BritBox series #AWomanofSubstance. #PeriodDrama Share on XInspired by the best-selling novel penned by Barbara Taylor Bradford, this is one period drama I wouldn’t ordinarily gravitate towards. Not because it doesn’t have an interesting story to tell, but because I’m not the biggest fan of stories that look back on one’s life in a dual timeline scenario. I’m also not a fan of stories, which I realized this is while watching it, where characters seemingly cannot find peace. This said one thing we are always sure of when it comes to the titles you find from British production companies, is a spectacular production. This show is no different.
TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE OTHER BENNET SISTER’: BRITBOX TELLS NEW AUSTEN ROMANCE
The story may not be among my most favorite, but the cast and the costuming stun. From the leading ladies playing Emma at two very different times in her life to the supporting cast, the performances are fabulous. The “look” of the production is also great and while the costuming isn’t all 1900s for as long as one might like (because decades pass), what is here is gorgeous.
A Woman of Substance isn’t to be missed if you like stories about clever women. I admire what Emma builds, but do question some of the choices she makes. If you like other period dramas set in this timeframe or you simply want a story of an ambitious woman who uses her smarts to create security, then this is something you will like watching. It’s as ambitious as its titular heroine and its heroine earns every bit of her gumption.

Content: The show has more than one adult scene. There are three sex scenes in episode one. (One involves slapping and being “rough” before the scene cuts away. Another shows a couple undress and focus on her face during sex while we see his bare back; this scene is briefly remembered in another episode.) Sex scenes also follow in future episodes (these involve undressing hands exploring). There are other such scenes throughout the series. Some scenes have nudity, but they’re usually very brief glimpses. Another scene shows a man forcing himself on a woman. There is profanity too including the F-word. The show would likely rate TVMA.
