‘PROJECT HAIL MARY’: RYAN GOSLING LEADS POPULAR SCI-FI FLICK

Based on the ridiculously popular novel (of the same name) by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi adventure flick that marks Ryan Gosling’s first big role since Barbie.

Project Hail Mary (2026) Film Review

Waking in unfamiliar surroundings is the place where Ryland Grace (Gosling) finds himself. He isn’t sure who he is, where he is or why he is where he is. Turns out, he’s in a kind of spaceship that is impossibly far from the home he cannot quite remember. As he tries to make sense of everything, snippets of his life as a science teacher return as does his purpose for being here.

It seems he has a mission: his objective is to solve the puzzle of a substance that may cause extinction on Earth.

Ridiculously high user ratings is one of the things this film boasts. It also has a pretty good cast that is led by the familiar talent of Ryan Gosling who is then surrounded by a lesser-known cast consisting of Sandra Huller, Lionel Boyce and James Ortiz. While entertaining, I have to confess that despite its blockbuster status and anticipatory release, especially from fans of the novel, this film really isn’t a “me” kind of film. I just don’t love films like this.

Despite these reservations, I can admit that the movie has entertaining qualities. The sense of adventure that presents a noble hero in Ryland makes everything more fun. The pace keeps things moving quite slow though I think this is, in part, because of the confining space the film takes place in. The film also has to be largely carried by Gosling, too.

When it comes to adventure movies, I don’t think Project Hail Mary is something I will watch again. Still, I did find the humor surprising but needed and the performance of Gosling a good one, too. As an adaptation, I have no idea how this stacks up, but purely for fun, the movie entertains.

Stream, at publication, Project Hail Mary with MGM+; or you can digitally purchase the film on places like Prime Video.

Content: this one may have some minor suggestive remarks and some profanity, but is a film that rarely abuses its PG-13 rating. We see the faces of people who have died and are stuck with someone in these confining spaces.
