Sorrow has become a burden that the Owens women must carry. Sally (Sandra Bullock) dreamt her whole life of finding love, but has since lost two loves of her life. In the aftermath of her husband’s death, she raised her two daughters and hasn’t looked back. Her free-spirited sister Gilly (Nicole Kidman) has helped raise her nieces and for many years, thus they have lived.
Sally’s girls are now grown and Antonia (Maisie Williams) is pursuing her career as a doctor and keeps busy. Meanwhile daughter Kylie (Joey King) is falling in love. Then the family goes through a death and a terrible accident which forces Sally to reveal that the Owens women are witches forever cursed to lose the one they love…

‘PRACTICAL MAGIC 2’: A SEQUEL LOOKING FOR MORE MAGIC Share on XBack in 1998 when Practical Magic was released, it apparently wasn’t a grand theatrical hit. Though not a film I saw at the time, this was something that surprises me given its star power. However, later on the film garnered a happy fanbase and became a cult classic. Now keeping that in mind, a sequel comes along which also brings back its core female actresses playing Owen’s women.
Based on the headlines of critics’ reviews, Practical Magic 2 seems to be repeating patterns. I don’t know whether it should be well loved from the reality of a critic, however as a viewer who did (quite to my surprise) love the original film, I think this sequel is charming. It’s appropriately spooky (adjacent) and still lighthearted and feel-good. The plot perhaps feels quite similar to its predecessor but takes its heroines on a journey to try and mend hearts which is amicable.
The return of Bullock and Kidman is delightful and I love seeing them return to the big screen. There has been some controversy about new additions, but King and Williams are good in their roles and if you like the OG movie, you will love getting to know these Owens ladies. No matter if you are a fan from back in the 90s or you, like me, met these characters more recently, you are sure to see how warmth, charm, sisterhood and spooks can collide in the best way as you let Practical Magic 2 enchant you!

Content: PG-13 is the rating of this film. There is depictions of magic, some gets a little dark, but not terrible. This has spells, and someone turns to dust / ash under the weight of a power; two people die (neither one is violent) and people lift a curse or spirit from a man which gets intense. There is innuendo and suggestive remarks. Characters find another person stark naked (the camera avoids anything graphic). There is an f-word.
