Agatha Raisin, Series One: An Entertaining Sleuth Comedy

by

If you like British TV series, you’re probably like me in your pursuit of them. One of the series I discovered is this cozy hamlet type mystery Agatha Raisin. It’s a dramedy that’s as colorfully quirky as it is humorous.

Agatha Raisin, Series One (2017) TV Review

Agatha Raisin, Series One

Life in the big London city lost its appeal which is what leads Agatha Raisin (Ashley Jensen) to the small countryside village of Carsley. Though she’s a city girl through and through with a loud wardrobe to match, Agatha is determined to make this new move work. This is why she, along with her best friend Roy Silver (Matthew Horne), makes attempts to get to know her neighbors, or rather one in particular. You see, Agatha quite likes the handsome next-door-neighbor, James (Jamie Glover). The only trouble is, James is dating someone whom Agatha doesn’t like. Not one bit.

She’s soon distracted by a mysterious murder in the village, and she finds she has a keen eye for gathering clues. This much to the dismay of the local police inspectors!

I don’t know about you, but when you discover a genre to love, you’re more than likely to work a little bit harder to find them. I know I certainly do. In fact, this is the only way I have made some of the discoveries I have (including the gem that is North & South). This series is one that, if I’m being honest, doesn’t get enough screen time because of its very few episodes.

TV SHOW REVIEW | Whiskey Cavalier, Pilot – A New Comedy That Tries to be ‘Better’

The first series is limited to a mere eight episodes (unless you count the pilot, ‘Quiche of Death’) which is a little bit “painful” for the TV fangirl. This concept is just so much fun, and is half the reason why we don’t want this to end. The other half is Ashley Jensen’s Agatha. Though she’s a Scottish actress, American TV goes will recognize her from the ABC comedy Ugly Betty. She’s perfect as the titular character!

In Agatha we meet someone who we immediately like. She’s sassy, bright and best of all, clever. We root for her to solve the case and prove the pesky police officers wrong. Speaking of those investigators, I adore the cute police man Bill Wong (Matt McCooey). His crush on Agatha is darling, as is his earnest personality, both professionally and socially. Needless to say he’s an underrated TV crush of mine.

Beyond all of the character gushing (which I could press on with), I adore every little thing about this series. From the quaint, “picturesque” setting to the sass of its titular character, this Sky1 series is brilliant. It’s almost like a Miss Marple series for the contemporary era; I’d even liken it to Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Agatha’s cases are just as interesting, and the investigation process just as entertaining to solve.

  1. Are we going to get a second series ? I do hate it when series are axed without bringing to a conclusion.
