Smart has been what Olive (Lili Reinhart) has operated on and with for most of her life. She’s working as a Ph.D. candidate in the biology field with big academia goals, and her mind is ideally suited for the work. She isn’t quite as well suited for how to tell her crush that he’s her crush! Then, her best friend develops an interest in Olive’s crush which forces her to make a choice.
Trying to prove that she’s no longer interested, Olive kisses the first guy she sees which is the one man she shouldn’t be kissing, professor Adam Carlson (Tom Bateman), and he also happens to be the one man no peer on campus likes.
Olive and Adam decide that the only way to sell this is to fake date and so armed with a list of rules, they set out to convince everyone that they are a committed pair little realizing that they too may become convinced…

Expectedly so, this is one of those steamier romances that also has a rom-com tag. Based on a novel by Ali Hazelwood, the book boasts high ratings, and the film has been teased for a while now. Because I like to be transparent, I also have to admit, the book isn’t one I’ve read and isn’t likely to be one I will. Reportedly the film does do a nice job adapting the story though, so you let me know (does it?). Having said all of this, I’m not sure what I think.
FILM REVIEW | ‘YOU, ME AND TUSCANY’: SEE SOME REALLY BEAUTIFUL VIEWS!
In some respects, I think The Love Hypothesis is charming and unexpectedly sweet. Then there are elements where I don’t think it captures that “it” factor is fans want from the genre. And this I say even accounting for the fact that it’s 2026. The film, while nothing “new” in terms of the tropes, has its moments and there are some that really make me love it, including the post-credit realization that the more I think about it, the more I did enjoy this film. It was both exactly what I’d expect and also nothing like what I assumed it to be. Based solely on one watch, I don’t think I can confidently say this is a new favorite, but I did like the movie.
If you like book adaptations or you enjoy romances from all the different streaming services, make sure to consider watching The Love Hypothesis. Happily, the one thing I can confidently say is, it does surprise in all the right ways.

Content: This one does have profanity including the F-word (a few times) and other crude sexual profanity. There are also lesser uses of profanity which includes sh*t. There’s a sex scene that is more descriptive and suggestive than the normal rom-com (this film rates R). We see nudity (full backside for him, side and front for her) and plenty of leg / movement. There is also conversation about different types of sex (if you have to have an emotional connection). Additionally, some thematic material about sex and using power to get it is a part of the final act.
