REVIEW | When I read and wrote reviews for the first two books in author Dani Pettrey’s latest series (Chesapeake Valor), I didn’t realize a fourth novel would follow. You see, Luke is a big part of the respective pasts of these characters. His presence is that of a “shadow” character mentioned but never seen. This is why I assumed he’d remain this way. When the author made the announcement a fourth novel that would reveal Luke’s story would be in reader’s hands, the excitement was real.

The excitement and prospect of Dead Drift’s arrival isn’t misplaced. Inside these pages is a signature Pettrey novel full of exciting suspense and characters that readers love. (Plus the pace moves at a quick clip!). Since this is the final book, there’s a lot going on in this story. Both of which involve two story threads of the mysterious variety, both of which run through the entire series. Plus, the book runs on the shorter side (something I applaud!), and even still, the book tells a cogent story.

There’s romance interlaced with the back-and-forth breath-catching drama. There’s injuries, and build up to the conclusion that finds out if a HEA is in Luke’s future. Since Dead Drift is like the climax to a 3-book series that leads up to these events, I don’t want to say much for fear of giving away spoiler-y things. Suffice to say, this surprise fourth novel is wonderful.

If you’ve read and like Dani’s novels, you’ll again find yourself on the hunt with Luke and Company as they do good. It’s a noble cause and again the kind of story that swells pride in the heart of this American. All this to say, after reading Dead Drift, I’m more excited than ever to discover what comes next from the talent of Dani Pettrey.
