Though Marvel is a phase I went through loving (and in some ways I still do), I did come into the fanbase late. As a result, it seems strange to think of some of the first “new” movies I saw, like Thor or Captain America celebrating milestone birthdays. Specifically today we need to pull out some party poppers for the one and only Steve Rogers for Captain America: The First Avenger 10 years later (PLUS quiz!).

Appropriately, this film’s subtitle is ‘The First Avenger’ which would later lead to the impressive and popular ensembles films that we know as The Avengers. This is the first solo film for the character of Steve Rogers and Captain America and so it introduces us to him and his backstory. Steve starts out as a scrawny kid desperate to step up and serve his country in WWII. When his health prevents him from achieving this, the little guy with big aspirations decides to submit himself to a potentially dangerous experiment that would turn him into a kind of super strength soldier. Of course, there is a lot of story from there, complete with plenty of heroics and a sweet, but sad sprinkle of romance, too.

This is THE Steve Rogers I root for. This is the character I love best and the kind of Marvel hero that’s easy to cheer on and support. He’s the epitome of a solid and likable fictional American character. To be fair, I will admit I didn’t get the chance to re-watch any part of this film before putting this together. That said, I still feel like my memory of him from this is good. Does he have flaws? Sure. But I still think he’s a pretty swell hero. To celebrate the tenth year of this film being in the world, we’re doing our usual movie anniversary staples with some quiz fun!
