‘LIVING WITH THE ENEMY’ IS ONE CLASSIC MYSTERY RE-TELLING

When there’s mystery (or any genre) movies available on any of the streaming services we already pay for, I try to find ones to enjoy because, I’m stubborn in waiting out the movies that cost something. Living with the Enemy is one of those lower budget mysteries that pretty much re-tells a gothic classic.

Working hard is all Allison Connor (Sarah Lancaster) really knows. She’s the underappreciated and ill-treated by her high powered boss, but being alone in the world, she only has herself to rely on. While at a business event with her boss, she meets Philip Lauder (Mark Humphrey), a wealthy and self-assured business man.

In a whirlwind, Allison is swept off her feet, and ends up at Philip’s mansion estate. But once there, she hears of secrets and rumors about Philip, and will she discover something that may be dangerous?

I didn’t know much of anything about this film when I hit play. I’d seen the little tile when scrolling but didn’t know details. However it’s not long into it before I realized it’s a loose re-telling of the atmospheric classic Rebecca. There’s differences to accommodate the modern timeframe, but it has that same feeling as the novel. The movie has a very short, whirlwind of a timeline which doesn’t feel realistic, however given its inspiration, one can understand this. living with the enemy

The film has some good actors, including Chuck’s Sarah Lancaster. She’s also fun to see in something, especially after liking her in the former NBC show, and some of us will have seen her in Hallmark films, too. Lancaster is pretty good in the role, and the script adds in “just enough” mysterious, potentially dangerous things to keep us guessing over the good and the bad.

There’s lots good about this, but if you like a more realistic timeline, then you won’t like this one. But if you don’t mind the tumultuous kind of set up, you may like this unknown film; there’s a kind of mysterious fairy-tale vibe that’s entertaining.

Content: there’s two sex scenes, both with back and side nudity and lots of caressing, kissing, etc. There’s some tense moments of suspense, but nothing scary. Two people are shot with dart guns, another is shot with a gun and eventually is inside a house that blows up; another man shoots himself. The film is TV-14.
