STANDING WITH CONVICTION: WHAT DOES DEFENDING A BELIEF MEAN TO YOU?

One of the things that has changed about me or perhaps in me is that in the last 3 years or so, I’ve become more aware of, well, life. Sometimes these things are joyous news or occasions, or sometimes it’s the silliest thing that inspires laughter in real happiness. However, other times it’s more serious and potentially, a danger to the bigger scope of my world. As a result of this, I think on things a great deal and in observing the posts of those I follow on Instagram, or see what those with huge platforms say or seeing other articles, one of the things on my mind is conviction. More specifically the question of what does standing with conviction mean?

In recent months, one of the things I see a lot of in social media is headlines or social media, with a following, is voices who are standing up for their convictions. In recent months what I’m not seeing is enough people following these people who boldly putting forth their beliefs.

Through the years, in society or pop culture, we’ve been encouraged to be unique. I’ve seen it. We’re further encouraged to BE OURSELVES. However that is, apparently, selective and doesn’t extend to certain thinking. In 2022, this is on steroids.

To go off on a rabbit trail for a moment, more recently I’ve had a big heart and interest in finding small business shops to support. One of the shops I’ve found is called Conviction Co. Its tagline reads giving you words to speak truth with conviction and that is something that resonates with me. I love that her shop has pro-America gear that’s also cozy and stylish as well as a line of Christian apparel that focuses on the verse in Romans 12:2 that tells us NOT to conform. My point is, the tagline of this shop is something that we should strive to apply to life.

What are our convictions? Do we have them? Are we numb now to owning convictions? Are they from our own independent thinking? Or from the people (social media) who tell us we’re bad if we don’t do x, y or z?

My convictions do, in part, stem from listening to the people I believe only put out truth. However, I am also a thinker. I may read something, put it in the back of my mind and then later on, I see something else that triggers that earlier thought. This will then inspire off and on thinking for days.

Fear may stop us from taking that first step to be bold, but I hear so many people say that after that initial step, there’s reward. Also a possible outcome of standing up is an answer you don’t want. But if we’re being true to truth and what aligns best with how we live our lives, then that is part of what will inspire us to find that deep, lasting joy. There’s a quote I love that I wish I lived by more. It reads:

This I believe in but likely don’t apply to my life. Why do I care? I don’t apply this to people who matter to me in my life, but rather in the public opinion of those I encounter in a passing way. These people don’t truly know me, they don’t know how I spend my time or where I spend it. Therefore, their opinion of me doesn’t have weight or deserve time in my head.

Life is short. Life is beautiful. Life is hard. Life is good.

In this, may we all realize that because of this, life IS too short to fear (day to day) whether or not to choose “safety” over doing the hard thing. Because whether or not we realize it, doing the thing that may make us uncomfortable (temporarily) will actually inspire a far fuller and happier life because when you speak and live your convictions, there’s goodness. Standing up is right. Standing up is encouraging. Learning how to do this may be hard and it may take us some time in getting there, but once we do, there’s conviction.

What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you believe conviction is important? Do you speak up and our on your convictions? What are your thoughts on convictions in social media? Are you seeing more people stand up for them? Or is it less? Comment all of your thoughts down below!
