‘YOU’VE GOT MAIL’: THE NOSTALGIC MOVIE EVERYONE LOVES

Loving autumn in New York is probably one of the more famous social media memes, based on You’ve Got Mail that makes the rounds. The film is also one of those nostalgic movies the masses love.

You’ve Got Mail (1998) Film Review

Running a small book shop keeps Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) busy. But the one thing that causes a catch in her throat is dialing up her Internet connection and hearing the three little words you’ve got mail. There she finds conversation and friendship with NY152. As ShopGirl, Kathleen pours out her heart. She tells him everything and despite not knowing each other face to face, their friendship helps Kathleen. Especially when a mega book store is about to open near her Shop Around the Corner children’s store.

Working with his father as the third generation business man running Fox and Sons Books, Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) is good at what he does. When he serendipitously meets Kathleen, he keeps secret who he is only to learn a secret that could challenge the mutual loathing the pair engage in.

MOVIE QUIZ | A SECOND ROMANTIC COMEDY MOVIE QUIZ: WHICH ONE ARE YOU?

This film is over twenty years old and yet it’s a kind of generational classic that has nostalgia that holds up. It also happens to be one of those movies I never really laid claim as an all-time favorite in the way While You Were Sleeping is. Recently I re-watched the comedy and while I don’t think it rockets to the top of my favorites, I will admit, it’s a film that has charm and is therefore easy to understand its likability. youve got mail/span>

Some of this film spends a lot of time showing characters writing notes and sometimes that doesn’t work well because it drags things on. This one, for a romantic comedy, does run a little overlong but the old fashion ideals and extremely personable characters allows for everything to flow. Just one of their handful of collaborations, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were clearly a duo audiences like together. The whole cast which also includes Steve Zahn and Heather Burns, is quite fun.

The entire aesthetic is a mood in this film and I like the many twinkle lights we see hanging in the bookstore as well as the posters or mentions of classic literature. The script is also memorable and witty. I don’t see You’ve Got Mail skyrocketing to the top of my favorites in this genre. Nonetheless, this 90s romance dramedy is charming and is a title I did thoroughly enjoy re-watching.

Content: there’s nothing much to mention. There’s some minor innuendo and three guys talk about sex, mildly so. It keeps things tame and doesn’t burden the PG rating. There is some profanity and in general, some may think there’s too much “mean” between the character conversations.
