Basketball has been in full swing for a while now. It’s nearly at its end but if you’re a fan of basketball movies or you are just tired of the actual game and prefer some story with the game, then this is a list for you. We’re pulling together some dramatic and fun basketball movies to watch.

Sometimes the things I think are going to be easy because there’s so many fitting whatever my parameters are, actually turn out to require the most research and work. This is true of our list today. While there are more basketball films out there than are included here, some I just don’t know enough about or they don’t fit the usual genre type I talk most about. Still I cannot help but wonder how many I’m missing the hoop with. Here’s the collection we did pull together.

FUN BASKETBALL MOVIES TO WATCH

BELIEVE IN ME

Based on a novel, this follows an ambitious coach who faces uncertainty when he and the school board clash.

COACH CARTER

Samuel L. Jackson stars in this drama that is based on the true story of one high school football’s coaching story.

DOUBLE TEAMED

A Disney Channel movie (back when they were far cuter), this tells the story of two sisters who come to America and become basketball stars. Nick Searcy (from Justified) stars.

GLORY ROAD

Like many sports movies, this is based on a true story of the 1965 Texas Western College team. One I’m sure builds on all the inspirational feels.

HOME OF THE GIANTS

An older, from 2007, drama featuring a young Haley Joel Osment, this follows two teens who, after getting into trouble with the law, face consequences and the possibility that this could cost them a state championship.

HOOVEY

Based on an inspirational story according to its trailer, Lauren Holly stars in this film about a young man who shows promise as a basketball star only to collapse on the court and learn he has a tumor.

HURRICANE SEASON

In the aftermath of Katrina, a coach rebuilds his Louisiana team.

JUST WRIGHT

A film that takes a more romantic approach, this one falls into the rom-com category with Queen Latifah playing the role of a physical therapist who falls for a patient.

THE MIGHTY MACS

Inspired by a true story, this is one I saw years ago. I don’t remember much except that it feature Carla Gugino in the lead role.

REBOUND

Martin Lawrence stars in this as a disgraced (a common theme in sports movies) college coach who’s limited options bring him back to coach his middle school team.

THE ST. TAMMANY MIRACLE

This one tells the story of an episcopalian school where the girl’s basketball team hopes to make a name for themselves alongside the assistance of a new coach.

THE WINNING SEASON

A quirky dramedy with Sam Rockwell as a kind of “loser,” drifter character who is brought on to coach a girls’ varsity team. Emma Roberts co-stars.

Have you seen any of these? Which ones did you like best? Is there any I need to add to my list of must-sees? Which of these do you think I haven’t seen and should? Comment all of the comments below. Let’s talk.
