‘FREE GUY’: A REALLY FUN POPCORN FLICK

A good comedy is hard to find. Those that have a touch of magic are all the more curious. One of these is Free Guy, a film that earned some fun audience curiosity with a fan favorite actor.

Free Guy (2021) Film Review

Daily work and routine is all Guy (Ryan Reynolds) knows. It’s routine to the point of boring. But each day he says good morning to his orange fish, pulls his same blue polo from the closet and goes to work at the bank. He is one of the ordinary people, not one of the sunglass people who take what they want without apology. Breaking free of pattern, one day Guy does the unexpected and breaks pattern. This causes a calamity he is quite unaware of.

You see, what Guy doesn’t know is he’s an expendable character living inside a video game. Trouble is, the creators of the game cannot fathom how Guy breaks protocol. Millie (Jodie Comer) is one of the game creators and upset over her game code being stolen, she enters the game with hopes of coming back with proof. While inside, she meets Guy and there’s something about him…

This is one of those films that finds an audience which now counts this as a very popular film. The ratings of the film on places like Amazon prove this as does the plans for a sequel. I’m sure much of this is helped by Reynolds in the lead role, an actor who establishes himself as a comedic actor. The film is an unusual premise but the comedy is gold. There’s some lines that cater too much to keyboard warriors and so called advocates. Nonetheless Reynolds acting makes it hilarious.

Everyone is super fun in the cast and gives us fun characters to root on. The rest of the cast is more unknown to me outside of its leading man however we see a hilarious cameo from Channing Tatum and Chris Evans. Both are fabulous (though blink, and you may miss Evans’). The end is also quite bittersweet, and there’s one edit I find a little suspicious. This isn’t one of those films you’ll see on a best picture list but it IS a film easy to place on a rewatchable film list. Free Guy is so much fun to watch and if you have a chance to and haven’t seen it (unlikely since I’m always the last person to see the popular ones), consider watching it. It’s a good time.
