POP CULTURE NEWS SEVENTY-SEVEN: THE STORIES OF THE WEEK
It’s Friday and specifically, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. The seventeenth means the traditional meal for many (are you one?) and the opportunity to sport some shades of green. My nails are painted green so I don’t feel the need to wear a green sweater or that’s what I’m going with. In the meantime, what we’re really here for is to find all of the recent and weekly entertainment type news. Let’s dive right in. pop culture news seventy seven

✨ POP CULTURE NEWS EDITION SEVENTY-SEVEN: THE STORIES OF THE WEEK. #POPCULTURE #ENTERTAINMENT #OSCARS #GREATAMERICANFAMILY Share on XEach week is a curiosity as to whether or not we’ll find much to run with since I tend to prefer stories that lean into being conversational pieces. Most weeks I don’t find those types of stories so we make do with upcoming productions or whatever the latest TV show chatter is. Let’s see what we find this week, outside of the Oscar night fallout, which is always a given.
POP CULTURE NEWS SEVENTY SEVEN
We begin, to get that out of the way, with that Oscar fallout. Social media users are angry that an actor wearing a fat suit, portraying a large man, won for best actor. This is Brendan Fraser who won for the role he played in The Whale. (Not sure why some people were believing Austin Butler would win. Either way, I hope his role as Elvis Presley is good for his career, because he did play the role well.) Second thing keyboard warriors are made about is Jamie Lee Curtis winning for best supporting actress over Angela Bassett. Looks like a pretty good list of winners to me full of solid talent and that’s what everyone, at least this is what I thought, wanted.
Great American Family is upping their Christmas movie slate in 2023. Trevor Donovan and Merritt Patterson will star in one by Christmas by Chance.
Netflix and Nancy Meyers have parted ways over a project they were going to produce. According to reports, this was because of budget issues. Her film is being courted by other studios though.
This is Us star Justin Hartley is set with his next drama which was once known as The Never Game. Retitled, the drama is now Tracker and follows Hartley as a character who travels the country to help various law enforcement solve curious crimes. CBS will begin promotion in earnest for this come March Madness.
Rumor has it that Lucy Boynton (Sense and Sensibility, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?) will executive produce and star in an adaptation of Josie Silver’s One Day in December. The series would, as rumor goes, find its home on Netflix though according to reports, they didn’t comment on the news. Did you like the story? Honestly, I read the book a few years ago, and it just wasn’t a “me” kind of story.
If you’re a fan of the Monk TV show, you’ll likely be happy to know that a reunion movie, with original cast, is in the works.
It’s not the Speak Now album (which was rumored to drop pre Eras Tour), but Swift is released her versions of If This Was a Movie (anyone remember this one?); Safe & Sound; and Eyes Open. Plus, All of the Girls You Loved Before which doesn’t have the ‘Taylor’s Version’ with it. So it’s a new song, I guess? Sometimes I forget the more obscure songs she has, so don’t ask me to remember.
This isn’t really a story new this week, but Dani Austin, the popular influencer and business woman, launched a podcast a couple of weeks ago. I don’t, as a rule, listen to podcasts with any frequency nor do I follow Austin outside of hearing stories about her or visit her page now and then. (When I say I don’t follow, I mean she’s not one of my “follow” button accounts on Instagram.) Still for some reason, last night (maybe because I was writing?), I listened to the first episode and it was quite interesting. Additionally today I listened to episode two (all she has now) and was impressed. I like the chill format and that her husband joins the conversation.
Though she’s currently in one of Netflix’s most watched dramas, Sarah Shahi is going to star in an ABC pilot called Judgement. It’s going to be what’s described as a drama to “redefine” the genre in a two timeline drama where Shahi is, fifteen years from now, up for a supreme court seat, but must answer for some of her life choices during her life in 2023. What might this mean for her as yet not renewed Netflix series? Fun fact, this isn’t Shahi’s first time in a legal drama. She also starred in the short lived 2011 series Fairly Legal, which I thought was fun.
Probably everyone and their mom has seen by now, but Disney released a trailer for their upcoming live action version of The Little Mermaid. I didn’t watch it because I’m making a habit of not watching trailers anymore. But I’m curious, what did you all think?
