‘SPACE CADET’ IS QUIRKY COMEDY THAT TRIES TOO HARD
Making its streaming home on Amazon Prime is Space Cadet, a comedy that is quirky and a little zany.

Her life is good but once upon a time Tiffany Rex Simpson (Emma Roberts) had big dreams. She planned to make it to space as a kid and had impressive college plans. But then her mom got sick and detours became her life. After getting a reality check and reminder of these plans, Rex makes a choice. She needs to go to space. So even without the credentials, Rex applies for NASA training by, well, telling the truth.
When she gets a call from Logan O’Leary (Tom Hopper) that she’s made it and will be heading to Texas for the trainer, Rex is ecstatic. The one lone oddball among her fellow trainees, what Red doesn’t realize is her application may not actually be truthful.

A script that tries too hard, and without hesitation, wants to hit all of the commonalities of the current trends. From the stereotypes of Florida to the eclectic personalities Rex meets (and her friends, too), we have more than one cultural stereotype. Some are annoying. Some endearing. Bottom line, I think Space Cadet‘s script just tries too hard to hit all of the stereotypes or marks of culture.
Most of all, it’s entertaining to see Emma Roberts in something. I’m not sure I’ve seen her in anything as an adult and I think her cheerful personality is fun. I also appreciate that she does grow and learn things which I think is always a good arc. The film’s overreaching concept is familiar and while the setting is very different, the film reminds me of Legally Blonde. It’s that kind of fish out of water story with a heroine we want to see meet the challenge she faces.
Despite its quirkiness (and don’t anticipate this being a romantic-comedy), Space Cadet is fun. It’s just not a new favorite.
