‘THE CASES OF MYSTERY LANE’: A HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DETECTIVE DUO

Part of their mystery changes, The Cases of Mystery Lane is a cute concept that kind of pays tribute to old school TV shows.

The Cases of Mystery Lane (2023) Hallmark TV Film Review

With plans to get a promotion, no one in her law firm is more scrutinized than Birdie Case (Aimee Garcia). Though she works as hard as anyone and strives to get the fair deal, her boss doesn’t always see this. Her boss also happens to be her mother. Alden Case (Paul Campbell) loves his wife, but also wonders where “they” have gone. Nothing seems the same between them, which is perhaps why he’s been lying to his wife.

Attending school to become a private investigator is the first thing Alden has done in a long time that seems very him. He’s made some big financial decisions that led to bad things, and so finding this feels right. However, when he begins to follow someone, as part of his class, he runs into a murder… and it connects to his wife’s law firm.

I’m one of those people who is disappointed in Hallmark for nixing many of their fan favorite mystery series. Including one that was my favorite and didn’t get many installments. However, my mother likes fun mysteries, so we did watch this one night. It’s cute and she enjoyed it. I didn’t think it was great. The concept is lots of fun and I like the kind of “nods” to or mentions of classic TV mysteries. I also think the dual meaning in the title is adorable. What I don’t care about is some of the acting. I’m not sure if it’s the actors together or just the general Hallmark rule of keeping everything “clean” when it comes to violence. If it’s the latter, this kind of hinders the “tension” in the film and is often awkward.

Campbell is a frequent Hallmark collaborator and someone I think 99% of fans like. He’s also co-written former Hallmark films. Aimee is a newer addition, but I do appreciate her (mostly) fun personality. The idea is, most likely, to produce more of these though right now, there isn’t news of this. Whether this comes to be or not, fans can be assured, you can watch this and enjoy it as is. Plus anyone who misses the mystery movies will find this in this film.

Content: a character ends up being in a secret same sex relationship though we don’t see them together. There’s some kissing and “tense” situations plus implications that people die by strangulation. The film is TV-PG.
