Miss Scarlet and the Duke, Series Two (2022) TV Review

Making what was her father’s detective agency, and is now hers, work is the career orientated goal of Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips). Things aren’t going as smoothly as she hopes but a client looking for her missing sister requires Eliza’s help. Willing to look into this and wanting to find the girl’s sister, Eliza takes on the case only for tensions to build – again – between her and Inspector William ‘Duke’ Wellington (Stuart Martin) when the police close the case.

Not to let anything deter her, Eliza continues to work the case finding some surprising connections and conclusions.

From PBS and Masterpiece Theatre, this show is from production companies that consistently put out beautiful period drama that’s easy to get lost in. Set in the 1880s, the show has two people leading the characters who are both quite similar and yet social media commentary tends to blame only one person for the bickering between the pair. Primarily it’s this that takes some of the stars out of my eyes for this show.

Don’t mistake me, I do still enjoy it. It’s got so much beauty even in the darker atmosphere. Plus, most of the cases are a good time. The costuming is, as always, gorgeous and Kate Phillips wears it all quite well. Additionally, the cast is so good. Whether we’re talking about supporting characters or the main actors, they’re all memorable. There’s of course some characters I don’t care for quite as well, too. But then there’s those that while not in every episode, are nonetheless memorable because their character still develops. For some reason, this one does tend to bring out my more critical critic.

If you enjoy period drama or just a fun kind of sleuthing show (and don’t mind that it’s set in the 1800s), Miss Scarlet and the Duke may be worth investing time into.

  1. I’ve been disappointed in seasons 2 & 3 mainly because it feels like we are not getting much in the way of character development. Season 3 was especially disappointing since one of the title characters didn’t even appear in a couple of hte episodes. But I will keep watching anyway in the hopes that I might see some growth.

    1. I’ll keep watching! Like… I enjoy the show surface level, but I just cannot with some of the annoyances. And I’m sure that I “forgive” some of these same tropes in other shows, but for some reason, this one bugs me more. ;) Either way, like you, I’m hoping for change and better storytelling. :)
