A sequel that is fun and entertaining to watch, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, didn’t seem to try too hard. Yet at the same time, I’d return if there were ever more.

Giving speeches and sharing the treasure he spent his life working for, Benjamin Gates (Nicholas Cage) and his father (Jon Voight) are proud to have made the discoveries they did. While his professional life may have taken off, his personal life is in something of a downfall. He and girlfriend Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) are splitting up and fighting over the division of the gorgeous antique furniture housed in their amazing home. More family secrets crops up when a page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth seems to suggest the Gates family ancestor was involved in the president’s assassination.
Looking to put his family history and name on the map, it’s Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) who becomes the sinister threat to the Gates family. Together with fellow treasure hunter and friend, Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), the foursome head out again on an unexpected adventure. national treasure book of secrets

Just like the 2004 original National Treasure film is, this sequel is great fun. It’s adventurous without being scary or crazy. The only thing is, the story is very familiar to that 2004 drama. I’m not sure if the production was banking on a repeat of its success or it’s because all of the same people were involved, but a lot of the plot highlights seem very familiar. Something I probably noticed since I re-watched both in a matter of a few weeks.
Nonetheless, the flick is still good fun. Plus, what’s even better is we get to see the return of the cast. The banter of Abigail and Ben is still there; the quirky humor of Riley; and the loveable grumpiness of Mr. Gates. All of it plus a fun new surprise or two is here. It’s this character familiar that we do want and do love to see. The repeat script doesn’t detract from the good time you’ll have, and if the long rumored third movie were to be made, I’d be one of the first to see it.
