The director’s first, at least based on his credits, directing title is from 1925 and is a feature (if an hour and fifteen minutes is considered such) called The Pleasure Garden. He directs films all through the 20s and 30s all through the 40s until we reach the earliest title by him, is the 1944 drama Notorious. In the 30s, the director even produced adaptations of both Jamaica Inn and Rebecca based on the Daphne Du Maurier novels. Then in 1943, he produced a film, Shadow of a Doubt, about a woman who learns her beloved uncle may not be who everyone things, which is believed to be his favorite.

Known for his mysterious tales, and later, the Alfred Hitchcock hour, perfectionist Hitchcock had similar expectations for each of his films, including making cameos in his films. Featuring some of the period’s most famous and biggest names, including repeat teams between Hitchcock and a star, below we share a collection of his films.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK FILMS

DIAL M FOR MURDER

This one is supremely entertaining and fun. It features Grace Kelly (who starred in a prior Hitchcock film, which is likely the more famous one) as a married woman who has a secret relationship with a man returning from America. Despite their reunion, she decides to stay with her husband, who has changed, little realizing that he has sinister plans. With more of a traditional whodunit (even though we know) element, I was glad to see this one has a higher user rating of 8.2 (vs 7.9) than one of his more famous titles To Catch a Thief. Additionally, it inspired four re-makes. Stream, at publication, with Tubi; or purchase on places like Apple TV

MR. AND MRS. SMITH

The only film considered a “screwball comedy” that Hitchcock would direct. From 1941, the film follows a married couple who learn they aren’t legally married. Hitchcock favorite Cary Grant was the director’s first choice for Mr. Smith, which went to Robert Montgomery because of the studio while leading lady Carole Lombard directed Hitchcock’s brief cameo in the film, and made him do many takes. NOTORIOUS

A kind of spy game story, this one moves slow, but is still entertaining and follows a man who recruits a spy (which Ingrid Bergman plays!). Trivia also says that Mission: Impossible II is a kind of remake, even down to certain sequences. Stream, at publication, with Tubi; or purchase the DVD on places like Amazon

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

Called “the first James Bond film” because of its premise, this is also one film star Cary Grant found baffling with a “terrible script.” It’s also a film that, reportedly, Grant didn’t expect to do well, but did. With its famous crop duster scene, the film follows a man trying to uncover why he’s been chased! Stream, at publication, with Tubi; or purchase on places like Apple TV

REAR WINDOW

In another one of their partnerships, Hitchcock and Stewart pair in this where Stewart is housebound and observes a murder. This film has even inspired spoofs like episodes on TV sitcoms (such as Raising Hope) and other mystery films, too. It’s also one I actually have not seen yet. STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

This one is quite good I think even though its cast is less famous than some of Hitchcock’s other titles. It’s a concept that has been used many times since for episodes of shows by Agatha Christie or TV crime drama procedurals, but it’s still engaging and perhaps one of his better ones in terms of watchability. TO CATCH A THIEF

One of the most famous, this has Grace Kelly and Cary Grant as a retired cat burglar. It also may be one of his most glamourous films, too. This is, reportedly, the film to draw Cary Grant out of retirement too, and he then went on to act for eleven more years. The 1955 film is considered one of the greatest of its decade. 1. I’ve seen most of Hitch’s US made films. I tend to be drawn to the ones that are less lauded or respected. Marnie is one of those. But mostly because it is like a train wreck that fascinates me and I can’t look away from. I also like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Even though it’s a marital comedy, the humor definitely has a dark undercurrent. The Trouble with Harry is also a dark comedy which is a lot of fun!

Shadow of a Doubt is definitely one of his most compelling and both Teresa Wright and Joe Cotton give fabulous performances in it. One that I don’t see mentioned which is also pretty popular is The 39 Steps. In some ways, it is a precursor to North by Northwest, since it features and innocent man getting caught accidentally in an intrigue who also ends up on a cross country trip with a mysterious woman.

    1. I think I’m going to like his lesser praised films. But then maybe they are praised and I just don’t realize it? I don’t know. I like Strangers on a Train and Dial M for Murder (so far) but didn’t adore To Catch a Thief which was one I was expecting to love and I feel like everyone enjoys that one. I was intrigued by Suspicion too which I watched after publishing this. I’d like to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith sometime because I want to see him do comedy.

I think I saw the remake of The 39 Steps and it kind of surprised me with its ending. But I’d still watch Hitchcock’s version, too! It was fun to read up on some basic trivia about these and put this together, too. So glad you shared your favorites/thoughts, Brittany. I’ll have to watch Shadow of a Doubt yet! I think I’m kind of “done” with what I can see unless I start buying new subscription services/renting movies. Most the time my rule is to wait movies out because I already have too much for streaming. ;)
