‘MR. MOM’: A HUSBAND AND WIFE NAVIGATE NEW ROLES

A comedy with Michael Keaton, Mr. Mom isn’t likely fashionable anymore, but it’s still one thing, and that’s a funny comedy.

Mr. Mom (1983) Film Review

An engineer working at a car manufacturer, Jack (Keaton) believes things could be changing at his workplace. What he isn’t prepared for is that he’s one being fired. When he comes home, it’s to his wife Caroline (Teri Garr) and three kids trying to cheer him up. Jack keeps a happy attitude and even makes a bet that he’ll get a job long before his homemaker wife who happens to have experience in advertising. Before long, he loses the best and it’s Caroline who gets a job at a big advertising firm where her boss (Martin Mull) seems to take a liking to her.

This leaves Jack home with his kids, just trying to keep them alive, and keep a household running.

Similar to many peers from the same period as this including Parenthood (with Steve Martin) or Baby Boom, this film is all kinds of fun. From the hilarious antics of Jack trying to stay above water (once quite literally) to the ups and downs of office life (which includes comedy, too), Mr. Mom is one of those movies that makes us laugh throughout.

For many it won’t be a film they can enjoy because it’s probably not appropriate to what the boxes must check today, but for those who can, you’ll enjoy this film. Especially if films like Yours, Mine and Ours or Cheaper By the Dozen are your kind of films. This one because of its timeframe lacks social media or cell phones, which is part of why it’s good and funny because it has to rely more on physical or witty comedy rather than trends.

Hilarious and surprisingly, touching in places, Mr. Mom is something fun to enjoy if the films in production today and on your streaming services just don’t hold your interest. It’s just something that’s 90  minutes of laughter, and that’s sometimes all I look for.

Content: nothing much to note. There is inference of affairs and someone becomes addicted to soap operas and we hear the torrid affairs of the characters. Two people try to romance two separate people. One involves someone in lingerie and a kiss; there’s an entire sequence about possible affairs. The film is PG.
