FIFTEEN TITLES TO WATCH IF YOU LIKE ‘MY LADY JANE’

by

One of the most popular series on Amazon at present is the eight part period drama comedy My Lady Jane. As we sometimes do when something is popular binge watch content, we wondered is there anything similar? Of course, there has to be, right? Well, we’re taking a look to see what we find fitting the theme of if you like My Lady Jane, watch these. And we totally don’t mean that as an order. Rather a (hopefully) helpful suggestion.

LIST | MEMORABLE FIRST KISSES FROM FILM AND TV

If you haven’t seen My Lady Jane, it’s obsessive about two things; women being the power and well, sex. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows. The novel takes events from history (about the nine day Queen of England, Jane Grey) and modernizes it to, almost, perfection. But honestly, after having seen some of Amazon’s adaptation, I have to say, I’m far more impressed by the novel which understands the balance between the sexes, and it’s marvelous. Still, since so many adore the series, we do wonder, what other shows or films feel like watchalikes?

These aren’t all the same in the sense of all having magic or some sort of royal trope, but instead some maybe “feel” similar because of the tone or the modern language.

Let’s meet them, dear readers.

IF YOU LIKE MY LADY JANE, WATCH THESE

THE ARTFUL DODGER

A Hulu original, I’ve saw mild excitement for this, but until this week hadn’t seen any. It seems to have great entertainment potential, but until I watch another episode, I’m not sure it’ll be my cup of tea. The story focuses on Jack, and asks the question of what comes after the events in Oliver Twist. Stream at publication on Hulu

THE BUCCANEERS

Nothing at all like My Lady Jane in its story (same goes for most we present), this one is more alike in its modern manners. From more of a “dating” style way of portraying the romances to the wild heroines, one can draw some similarities even if they are lesser. Stream on Apple TV+

EVER AFTER

This one doesn’t use magic, but it does have a prince and a mistreated heroine who finds her own unique strength. Also, who doesn’t love a lovely Cinderella re-telling? Stream at publication on Disney+

DAMSEL

This film from Netflix and featuring Millie Bobbi Brown had great potential. But it fails. However, if you like women to be the sole “good guys” and some fantasy elements, well, you’ll probably like this one. Stream on Netflix

GOING POSTAL

It’s been years since I watched this Terry Pratchett adaptation, but I remember it being magical and fun albeit also unusual. Fun fact, it also features Claire Foy pre her The Crown fame. Stream at publication with Peacock or Roku

LADY JANE

This one is more in line with the historical facts (and is sad by the end as a result!), but this period drama features a young Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes as Jane and Guilford, following them from their marriage to her mere nine days as queen. Purchase (digitally) on places like Amazon or Apple

MALEFICENT

Angelina Jolie stars in this film about the Disney villain. Stream at publication with Starz

Mirror Mirror

MIRROR MIRROR

A Snow White retelling, this one is all kinds of funny and entertaining. Stream at publication with Max if you like my lady jane watch these

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL

Also, a period drama sans any magical element, this one is set in the Tudor era and follows the lives of the Boylen sisters, and Henry VII, the man interested in both though it’s Anne whom he marries. Stream at publication with Netflix

PENELOPE

Modern, yes, but Penelope has the fairytale elements and is quite funny. Stream at publication with Amazon Prime or Plex

pirates of the caribbean, curse of the black pearl

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

I mean the high seas, a noble hero, a rake, and a sassy heroine means we have to include the pirates movies. Plus, the film has that fantasy thread, too. Stream at publication on Disney+

THE PRINCESS

From Hulu, Joey King leads the cast in this film about a girl who is imprisoned and expected to obey. She, of course, has other plans. Purchase (digitally) on Amazon or Apple

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

A classic for many, Cary Elwes stars in this about a bandit and a princess. Stream at publication with Disney+

ROSALINE

Kaitlyn Dever plays the sassy titular character. I think this film, while very different, is an example of a period drama that does take liberties, but is still fun and uses cheeky humor far better than My Lady Jane, which is more crude than cheeky and good. This is also an alternate version of Romeo and Juliet, which makes it a good watchalike since My Lady Jane is also twisting a story to its will. Purchase (digitally) on Amazon or Apple

STARDUST

Claire Danes, Charlie Cox and Robert De Nero (plus more) stars in this adventure about a man who finds a fallen star. Stream at publication on Paramount+ or Pluto TV

BONUS! ENOLA HOLMES and ENOLA HOLMES 2

These are adaptations of the Enola Holmes novels and feature a sassy heroine. There is a bit of romance, too, which I don’t think is in the novels. However, for the script, I think the romance is good. This I say beyond my enjoyment of a good cinematic romance. I think he is helping Enola realize that there is room for emotion and love and humanity, which I love. Stream on Netflix

BONUS! A KNIGHT’S TALE

This Heath Ledger comedy is quite fun and better yet, funny. I enjoy watching it as a rewatch now and then and find the modern humor quite fun.
