‘THE HOLIDAY JUNKIE’ IS A SURPRISINGLY EMOTIONAL STORYLINE

Finding its home on Lifetime is The Holiday Junkie, a film that its star pulls multiple duty on, and one cannot help but assume is semi-autobiographical, too.

The Holiday Junkie (2024) Lifetime TV Film Review

Working with her mother has been something Andie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has done for several years. In business together as holiday decorators, the pair do everything, from hanging lights to decking your mantle piece, all so you can sit back and relax. This year is different. This year Andie has a lot going on. She’s trying to recover from emotional upheaval and keep her business going.

As she decorates her latest client’s home, Andie meets Mason (Brian Hallisay), a man who manages the house Andie is decking. A man with his own share of upheaval, which crop up at Christmas, he seems to understand Andie in a way no one has for a long time…

Of all the Christmas movies I’ve seen new in 2024, this is only the second I’ve seen from Lifetime. The Holiday Junkie is fun and entertaining (and yes I know, I say this about nearly every Christmas movie) though not one I’m destined to consider a favorite. It still boasts some unique things and digs a little deeper into the emotional sides Christmas can bring up, so let’s look at what some of these things are.

Jennifer Love Hewitt co-writes, produces and directs this film as well as stars in. It’s likely inspired by her own grief and loss which makes the project feel more real and authentic and she does give a solid performance. Where it taps into its fun side is that this stars marrieds-in-real-life. Brian Hallisay is Hewitt’s husband, and when we know that, it lends more credence and emotion to an already charged film. The way they play these scenes is also, respectively, really nice.

If you like Lifetime movies, The Holiday Junkie is a cute one to watch. The décor (like usual) is too much and I don’t love everything about the story (as is true of any peer), but the concept is there and the acting good so it’s a solid watch, even if only to enjoy while wrapping a present or two.

You can stream The Holiday Junkie on Lifetime TV or digitally purchase on Prime Video

Content: one character mentions being gay if this bothers you. There is a kiss or two and the usual caught-without-a-shirt moment.
