FAVORITE TV SHOW SPOUSES WE LOVE
When it comes to television shows, and perhaps film, too, though mostly on TV, there are spouse characters we may love, but often overlook. Especially when the show is primarily about one spouse over the other or maybe one spouse is a primary character in an ensemble cast and their spouse only comes into the story here and there. As it’s spouse day, I’m going to look at some of the favorite TV spouse characters we love. Or maybe even some we’ve forgotten about.
LIST | REMEMBERING THE MANY UNIQUE FACES OF ‘PRIDE & PREJUDICE’ TO CELEBRATE ITS DAY!
FAVORITE TV SHOW SPOUSES WE LOVE. All of whom will hopefully become either a new character you can love or remind you of one you already did. Let’s meet them.
SPOUSE CHARACTERS we LOVE
PRINCE ALBERT from VICTORIA

While Albert is always depicted as being a wonderful support to Victoria, I think sometimes he doesn’t get “lost” in the shuffle of her busy life (based on the series depiction which is all I’m judging by). However, while he certainly “stands up” to Victoria here and there, I think, even in their squabbles, he’s supportive of her and her reign. Even if it does take him a bit longer then her to fall head over heels for the woman who become his queen as well as his wife.

SARAH BARNABY from MIDSOMER MURDERS
I really like Sarah. I think she’s a good fit for John and she’s supportive of him and his work. She contributes to his work too, even if not intentional.

BOB from ALLIE & KATE
Based on the little I know about this show, viewers didn’t like Bob. Or maybe they didn’t like the changed dynamic of his character addition. I recently binged this entire show, and while yes, I understand that the show is built on the banter and roommate funniness of the titular characters, I also think Bob added a fresh perspective and fun to the storytelling. He also fit pretty well with the short hand that was Allie and Kate.

ELIZABETH BURKE from WHITE COLLAR

I like Elizabeth a lot. She was, unlike most law enforcement spouses, quite understanding and supportive of her guy. I also think Peter is a good guy and spouse too, but again, even though Elizabeth plays a bit role in the show, the promotion centered more on the two male leads so I’m spotlighting Elizabeth for our list. favorite spouse characters

FAVORITE TV SHOW SPOUSES WE LOVE. A list of the spouse characters from TV we love. How many have you met? #PeriodDrama #Romance #TVShow #AccordingtoJim #DowntonAbbey #WhiteCollar Share on XCHERYL from ACCORDING to JIM

I suspect that modern audiences probably loathe Jim, and sometimes he does deserve it. However, I think his “gruff” is more often than not a “bluff,” and he’s really a good guy. However, it’s Cheryl that fits best on our list because the sitcom centers on Jim since its his name in the title and Courtney Thorne-Smith also took a lesser role in the latter years (likely because she started a family). To bring home the point I made in the beginning, Jim really does prove who he is at heart during this time. I also appreciate that while Cheryl also has her say and gets her moments of challenging Jim, the writing doesn’t always make her right and instead, in the end, often shows a more balanced and fair give and take in the marriage.

MATTHEW CRAWLEY from DOWNTON ABBEY
I adore Matthew. That scene when Mary tells him the truth (after she goes against the bad advice of her grandmother to keep quiet) is so well done. It allows them both to express their emotions and feel them all too. I respect Matthew a great deal and love that he loved Mary from the start.

BERTIE HEXHAM and TOM BRANSON from DOWNTON ABBEY
I don’t get to know Bertie a great deal, but I think he’s a good guy. Like Matthew, he seems genuine and accepting of Edith even with her mistakes, which I love. I also think Edith grows and learns in a solid arc, too. I’m not sure that I like Branson quite as well as a husband as I do just a wonderful character who persists and hangs in this Crawley family despite having a father-in-law who, well, kind of distrusts him.

CATHY KEATING from GRANTCHESTER
Another character I really like. She may be the “typical” stereotype 60s wife, but she has grit and gumption, and I admire that ultimately, she makes a choice about her relationship that may to some seem like she’s “giving up” but really, it’s a choice to work on something and work through. It’s always all about choice, and choosing your “hard.” favorite spouse characters

VAN MONTGOMERY from REBA

Perhaps written off as a “no one character” or someone who is just there for laughs, I remember really liking Van in my binge of Reba. He was a good guy character and someone I think deserves more credit. I also think Van represents the type of character (though in my book they don’t “need” to be lacking smarts to be this way) we need more of which is a cheerful, likable one; someone who doesn’t have darkness or a burdened past.

GREG OTTO from AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE
Katie is hilarious, and I think one of the more memorable mother characters from TV in recent history. However, Greg is often overshadowed by her colorful personality, and I think he deserves more credit, too. He’s stabilizing, which in my book is far from boring coded and an anchor for everyone.

FAVORITE TV SHOW SPOUSES WE LOVE. A list of the spouse characters from TV we love. How many have you met? #PeriodDrama #Romance #TVShow #TheWayHome #BlueBloods Share on XLINDA REAGAN from BLUE BLOODS

I loved Linda so much as a character from the long-running (now over) Blue Bloods drama; she was a memorable character. I like how she was there for Danny when he needed to vent (which he did often) but that they also fought, and she got in her opinions, too. Oftentimes it was good for both of them once they jointly worked together to fix whatever disagreement they were having.

LT. HARRIET SIMS from JAG
I think Harriet and husband Bud are both equally cool characters by themselves, and as spouses to each other. This said, I’m spotlighting Harriet only because she’s more the “recurring” character than Bud is in the long running (but long over now) show JAG. I think her wisdom is underrated and I like that she stands up for herself (in anything she does) all while still being dignified.

BRAD WILLIAMS from HAPPY ENDINGS
Brad, played by Damon Wayans Jr. is a main part of this ensemble comedy, but I think he’s kind of overlooked as a character. Or perhaps I’m simply remembering wrong. If I’m not, I feel like part of his being overlooked is the kind of crazy and confident character that is Jane, his wife. While I like them together, I do feel like he’s one we didn’t get to know and therefore I like him for this favorite spouse characters list.
Stream, at publication, on Hulu, Plex or Tubi; digitally rent or purchase on places like Prime Video
DEVON WOODCOMB from CHUCK
I know he’s considered to be an insignificant character in this former NBC comedy, but I really like Devon. I haven’t seen all of the seasons, but did see a few and I actually considered him more of a favorite character that the titular character’s best friend. So, yeah, given that he is the spouse of Chuck’s sister, this feels like a good time to spotlight a character I normally don’t!

BONUS! ELLIOT SPENCER from THE WAY HOME

Technically not a spouse. This I realize. However, it’s clear his intention towards Kat is leading towards making commitments to each other. He has future plans in mind beyond just “dating” for them and I have this sinking feeling that because of her shifting emotions and inability to “let go,” that he’s going to end up hurt. But maybe I’ll be wrong! How do you seen this romance ending – happily or in tears?

I love Cheryl from According to Jim. Of course, I do enjoy a lot of Courtney Thorne-Smith‘s work. I’m now watching this on Prime!
I also like Van from Reba.
Two favorites of mine! I think Courtney is fabulous as Cheryl (and she’s not afraid to share her opinions) and I also saw her in a Hallmark mystery years ago. :) According to Jim and Reba are both the kind of show easy to binge (and they both make me laugh!).
