‘WATSON’: CBS AGAIN TAKES ON THE LEGENDARY DETECTIVE SIDEKICK

In the second twist on the classic story from CBS in as many years, Watson retools the classic mystery adventures that are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. Only in this case, we follow only one half of the duo.

Watson (2025) TV Show Review

Moving on and trying to navigate life without his best friend is a challenge for someone who cannot quite remember what normal was like before his friendship. Yet, even with memories, some of which haunt him, Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) sometimes finds it hard to live without Sherlock Holmes. The reality is, John nearly died trying to save Sherlock. He has been gone for six months now, and Dr. Watson knows he has to move on. He makes attempts of doing this by returning full time to his profession as a doctor in a clinic Sherlock funded.

It’s in this work that he finds some of the strangest medical mysteries. Work that will perhaps also help to heal him…

The second CBS reincarnation of the Sherlock Holmes legend in the last fifteen years, Watson takes a new approach by eliminating the presence of Sherlock. The first show was Elementary that had Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu in lead roles. This time, it’s Morris Chestnut as Watson, although he isn’t an actor I’m that familiar with beyond knowing his name. He plays the role (so far) very well, and would rank highly in my favorites playing this iconic role. The supporting cast is pretty good, and CBS fans will recognize Inga Schlingmann from So Help Me Todd as well
Rochelle Aytes from Hallmark films.

This show, based on this pilot and as a first impression, is really good. I enjoyed the set up, and surprisingly, I did like John Watson as the lead. I’d be lying if I said the lack of Sherlock isn’t glaring. It is. This isn’t because Watson isn’t a compelling hero (he is) but rather because I love Watson with Sherlock and Sherlock with Watson as teammates; I appreciate that this one still honors Holmes and his loss. As this is produced by the same people who brought us Elementary, I have zero doubt this will be good. However, I’m not sure if I’ll stay on. The reason is because, yes, I miss Holmes, but mostly because medical dramas and I are hit or miss. (Mostly miss.)

The pilot sets up a good concept and brings with it some intriguing characters too. All of whom make us question them, wondering who they are. What is their intention? Are they going to be good? Or will they turn out to be sketchy? Like I said, this episode is good. The one thing that does make me unhappy is the seeming appearance of a drug addition the show is taking. That never goes well and it’s a plot I’ve seen too often, so it seems boring. Not sure what else is down the pipeline but am sure there are secrets to come.

All questions that will probably all be interesting finding the answers to.

Content: This episode has some tense scenes and moments. People go over a cliff, which kills some (unseen) and nearly kills another. If you are bothered by it, it’s implied someone likes both sexes. The show is TV-14.
