‘RETURN TO ME’ 25 YEARS LATER STILL HAS A BEAUTIFUL HEARTBEAT
Back in April of 2000, a little underrated gem made its mark at the box office. Underrated and not a title that seems to ever get a mention in movie lists, today it’s time to celebrate Return to Me 25 years later. The film has a tender and sweet heartbeat all its own, and features an unconventional but lovely cast.
LIST | SOME OF THE REASONS WE STILL LOVE ‘PRETTY WOMAN,’ 35 YEARS LATER
‘RETURN TO ME’ 25 YEARS LATER STILL HAS A BEAUTIFUL HEARTBEAT. Minnie Driver stars in the 2000 dramedy Return to Me. #MovieAnniversary #Movies #RomCom #Drama Share on XCharming but also a little bit awkward, the film follows a woman who, suffering from a serious health condition, receives a transplant that saves her life. Meanwhile, a man loses his wife and is mourning. Months pass, and Grace and Bob serendipitously meet, and from there, a friendship blossoms. This is the basic plot of Return to Me. Now we get to chat about what we love about this film.
RETURN to ME 25 years later
THE [UNCONVENTIONAL] CAST
For this era, the lead cast is perhaps unconventional. Minnie Driver wasn’t a common feature star in this type of role. She is, however, good and displays the appropriate awkward charm for this character. Similarly, I don’t think this was a common title for David Douchovny to headline (according to trivia, George Clooney was offered this role). In supporting roles, we also see Bonnie Hunt, Jim Belushi (both of whom are hilarious) and Carroll O’Conner, too.
Everyone is memorable and where one provides the charm, another is the comedy with a dose of reality, too.

EMOTION
There is a lot of emotion in this story. Between the loss and the impact of what Grace’s arrival in Bob’s life represents, there is plenty of tears, both good and bad. The story is still precious and if you don’t mind some misty eyes, then this is the ideal time to watch (whether for the first or tenth) Return to Me 25 years later.
THE LOVE STORY
I do love this love story. It’s not “smooth sailing” and has some drama, but I forgive this kind of drama in this because the reason for it has more weight in the emotion department.
MINNIE DRIVER
As I already mentioned, I really like Minnie Driver in this role. She plays it well and gives Grace the right kind of shyness and is, for many, someone to relate to in these personality traits. She’s charming and fun and a lovely heroine.

THE STORY
Though bitter, the story is also very sweet, and it has merit. There is lots of old fashion plot here and the struggles always feel genuine because they aren’t “petty” issues. The things that face this couple aren’t just arguments for the sake of arguments.
