‘THE BUCCANEERS,’ SEASON TWO: THE AMERICANS ARE SO BACK!

Apple TV’s soapy romance The Buccaneers returns for season two, and with it, more of the modernisms that don’t fit the era.

The Buccaneers, Season Two (2025) TV Show Review

The meek and quiet one of her group, Nan St. George (Kristine Froseth) makes a choice. She’s going to become someone she doesn’t want to and give up the man she loves. She’s resolved and nothing will stop her making sure her sister won’t suffer any more abuse at the hand of her unkind husband. Now, Nan is stepping into the role of a duchess, marrying Theo (Guy Remmers), a man who seemingly loves her, but it’s his best friend, Guy (Matthew Broome) who captures Nan’s heart.

No one else would Nan entrust her expectant sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) to…

Together, Guy and Jinny leave England behind, and Guy takes her somewhere safe where she can love and raise a child whose life she would otherwise fear for. Also in Nan’s prestigious society is her friend Conchita (Alisha Boe), a woman who married someone she loved, but has to live under the oppressive distrust of his family every day. Then there is Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) who is perhaps pursuing her happy end, and her sister, Mabel (Josie Totah); a woman living a life on her own terms, she has secrets her family isn’t ready to accept…

TV SHOW REVIEW | ‘THE GILDED AGE,’ SEASON TWO: A GORGEOUS DRAMA WITH WONDERFUL CHARACTERS

I’ve said it before, and I’ll happily repeat this, period dramas that go modern feel so “off” to me. I get why writers and producers do this (and I’m sure there is some sense of anything that isn’t “sexy” won’t sell), but honestly, I find it increasingly disconcerting. When I watch a period drama, I want it to transport me back to the era. Not see something where modern happenings and ideals are the norm, and the only difference is women wearing gowns and men a well festooned cravat. The show is pretty to look at but the modern music and modern manners (and hair!) just doesn’t quite allow this one to “fit” as a serious period drama.

Regardless, like I did say, I can admit The Buccaneers season two, which picks up just where one leaves off, is pretty. There’s lots of dazzle, clandestine meetings (where kisses are sure to follow) and of course, the battle of hearts and questions of who will be good. This story, same as in season one, seems to set up some somewhat repetitive lines with its two stories that rely on the forbidden love trope. This season what made headlines is the arrival of Leighton Meester joining the cast. Many others return to the cast including Christina Hendricks and Mia Threapleton.

At the end of season one, something I’m anticipating ruling in season two is the only guy who was trying to do the right thing in the first will be villainized in this follow-up season. Hopefully the writers will prove me wrong because I will be annoyed if this cannot give us one guy who does and is the right kind of hero. Based on the novel by Edith Wharton, I don’t know how closely this script follows, but am hoping to find something to like about more of the characters (I can admit, my curiosity is piqued) as season two presses on. Yes, I am still optimistic.

Stream The Buccaneers season two on Apple TV+; episode one is available now, episode two streams June 25th.

Note; I’ll update this with more thoughts as the season progresses

Content: based off the first episode, the content is much the same as season one. There is talk of a past affair and we see flashbacks of another night of passion between two people. A couple consummates their relationship on the beach. They remain clothed but there is some movement and touching, plus lots of passionate kisses and they talk on the beach afterwards. One couple is a same-sex romance (if this bothers you). The show is TV-14. Note; this content only reflects the first two episodes.
