‘SWIPED’ TRIES TO MAKE IDEAL LOVE MATCH
With a popular leading lady stepping into the lead role and a “based on a true story” premise, Swiped is one of those movies I didn’t know what I’d make of it. So, let’s find out.
Swiped (2025) Hulu Film Review
She has the education, ideas and passion to do good, but Whitney Wolfe (Lily James) now just needs someone who believes in her. Fresh out of college, she sneaks into networking events and mingles with peers and tech geniuses hoping someone will find her app ideas have merit. About to give up, she then meets Sean (Ben Schentzer); a CEO of a tech company, she goes to interview which ends up being her backing Sean in a pitch with potential clients. She’s hired on the spot and in time, she ends up becoming co-creator of the company’s new dating app, Tinder.
The app explodes just as Whitney’s personal life implodes which then loses her the job with the company she helped make into its success. This sends her spiraling and forces her to sign NDAs. With no prospects except an idea to create a social network with only women, Whitney loses herself and her drive until a new opportunity comes knocking…

Biopics have always been a “thing” or at least as long as I can remember has the subgenre made a mark. But apparently right now making them is a trend. Swiped is the latest, and while it does flounder, I can happily admit, it also does (surprisingly) entertain. I didn’t expect that at all.
Because of its genre, the film sometimes lags a little, but it also oddly moves fast, too. The story doesn’t stay with any one time period for long which I appreciate. This said, I think this also makes us feel somewhat disconnected when the big “turning points” of Whitney’s life happen. We sympathize, yes, but don’t really know the full why of this sympathy because of the glossy showing.
Lily James is good in this role and its great fun to see Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame) in something again. I also liked Ben Schnetzer and Myha’la in their respective supporting roles. The cast is solid. I like how they play their roles even knowing nothing about the world they play them in or the people they are representing.
The movie is definitely something I’m glad to see. It’s also something I would rewatch again. It has the mindset of forcing women to work ten times harder, so if that isn’t a narrative you like, this should be a skip. But all in all, even with some of its shortcomings, Swiped is quite good.

Content: the film has a TVMA rating with a “viewer discretion” advisory. There is some innuendo/crude remarks (someone is called a “whore” and there are countless text messages, which we can’t fully read). There are a couple of “heavy” make out scenes including one where the couple undresses. A minor reveal shows a same sex couple finding the “one” if this is something that bothers you. There is profanity including several uses of the f-word scattered about the nearly two-hour script.
