‘MISTLETOE MURDERS’ SEASON TWO FINALE RECAP: IS THERE MORE TO EMILY’S PAST LIFE? #MistletoeMurders #EmilyLane Share on XThis year, the second of the limited seasonal series, the story has two primary purposes, the first of which is the teenage mysteries of who Emily is and working to rebuild trust between Emily and her often reluctant partner in crime Detective Sam Wilner. The story also has a two-episode structure that ends up being three separate mystery stories per season, which makes up for six total episodes. The show also has some charming and delightful character moments, including ones that build (albeit a little too slowly) a possible romance between Emily and Sam.
Last week heals some of this romance and let’s us see them head towards beginning again as Sam tells Emily he won’t be looking into her past anymore. The only reason he did is that not being able to help someone he cares so much about is hard. The entire episode then ends with a little tease of the deeper mystery of Emily’s story, which is Emily thinking she sees a shadowy figure of his past.
This is where we end up as we went into this finale, so let’s get to the season two recap!
MISTLETOE MURDERS SEASON TWO FINALE RECAP
Note; spoilers to follow
CASE of the WEEK
Agreeing to help a friend, Ray, with a Christmas fest event (for obvious reasons), Emily gets caught up in another murder where this victim is a restauranter. This brings Ray to Emily’s door looking for help (but at least he cooks her breakfast!). We solve this mystery but not before we see more of Emily’s past, and the lives of Sam and Emily are threatened…
EMILY CONFRONTS her PAST
All season long, the writers have teased out not just Emily’s blush with first love, but also her origins as a dark web (and perhaps more?) savant. We see more of what Emily did as a leader of her hacker group. In this episode she comes face to face with that first love and we watch some of her carefully protected life unravel. Last week worry flashes on Emily’s face when she thinks she briefly sees (or thought she did) Aaron, the boy whose orbit she was willingly a part of. This story, though I’m not typically a fan of flashbacks, has been an interesting one and deserves mention in this Mistletoe Murders season two recap.

Turns out, the series cliffhanger shows Aaron reappear in her present after we’d been revisiting her past and the show peels back the “why” of their separation. We also learn that Emily was in intelligence which is where she honed the skillset we admire. But as important as that final scene is (we already knew it was coming, right?) first we have to look at where Emily and Sam stand.
WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE SAM and EMILY?
A big question I had going into this finale is where this season two ending will leave the primary couple, a twosome I really want to be a couple! Naturally I did want some resolution after the almost coupling at season one’s end, and then the rebuilding and honesty they’ve had in this season. But what we learn (in the first five minutes) is that Sam would like more than what they have when Emily labels their relationship after they catch up over coffee – they’re friends, which is what she calls them.

As part one (or the fifth of the season) ends, we see a pool of blood (!!), Sam prone and being dragged into a freezer. Emily, worried that he isn’t taking her calls goes after him and in the final episode, so episode six , these two experience real danger when they both become trapped in the freezer! Scary at first, of course, it also makes them think, and inspires them to get honest with each other. Sam opens up to Emily, and she opens up too, confessing her real name. They share a kiss, and at least for now, it seems like this is bringing them closer. But will reality keep them close?
They leave things happily and in traditional Christmas season watching, we see them dressed up and enjoying the festivities… but most importantly, sharing a first date in the twinkling glow of the gazebo.
ELSEWHERE
Monica arrives in town, and Sam introduces her to Emily. A fairly insignificant introduction is actually something because Monica is Sam’s ex.
Building off her arrival in town, we see Violet share a nice moment with her often referred to but (until now) never seen mother. She also confesses that the next phase plans she and her mother had aren’t what Violet wants.
Not an episode observation, but a seasonal one, obviously, now that Arron appears on her doorstep, we will need a third season!
Stream, at publication, Mistletoe Murders season two (and one!) next day on Hallmark+; episodes 1, 2, 3 and 4 are already streaming on Hallmark+
