‘MERV’: A SILLY COMEDY THAT WILL PROBABLY BE SUPER LIKABLE
A movie that isn’t really in my wheelhouse of being a favorite trope, Merv is a movie released at a great time of the year.
Merv (2025) Film Review
Breaking up is hard to do, but when you must share custody, that is even harder. This is the spot Anna Finch (Zooey Deschanel) and Russ Owens (Charlie Cox) find themselves in. It hurt to break up but he’s trying to keep busy teaching and Anna is reluctant, despite her friend’s prompt that she dates even six months later. They don’t love each other anymore, but they do still love Merv, the dog they adopted together, and now share custody of.
When he becomes depressed over the breakup of his humans, Anna and Russ are advised to try giving Merv a happier routine. This prompts Russ to take Merv on a trip and inspires Anna to follow in the hopes that Merv will find his balance again.
FILM REVIEW | ‘OH. WHAT. FUN.’: PRIME VIDEO BRINGS ON THE FAMILY CHAOS!
‘MERV’: A SILLY COMEDY THAT WILL PROBABLY BE SUPER LIKABLE. Reviewing the 2025 #PrimeVideo movie #Merv. Share on XThis is one of those movies that I am sure will charm many viewers and be one of those happy movies people enjoy rewatching. It’s not a type of story I really care about since I’m not attached to titles where dogs are the main characters. This I know is a minority mindset.
The sunny setting and Zooey Deschanel, who I still like and remember from New Girl, are probably the two things I like best. The film plays with the silly comedy angle quite a lot and has lots of joyful energy as a result. If you have enjoyed other movies where dogs title the movie or at the very least headline, well, you’ll probably enjoy Merv.
The Christmas aspect isn’t heavy, which is nice, but you still get some of those twinkle lights and the Christmas tree scene, too. There is also a cute golf cart (aka the lead in) sequence that is cute and is probably the most rom-com like part of the entire film. All in all, not a new favorite, but this is one I am sure will be highly rewatched by most viewers.

Content: there is a little bit of innuendo or crude humor, but nothing terrible. Everything is very on brand for a PG rating.

This sounds like a fun movie! I watched the trailer and that really hooked me in.
I liked Zooey Deschanel in Elf. I haven’t seen the show New Girl. I also really liked Charlie Cox in Dare Devil. So it sounds like a great cast. Looks like this is going to be our Friday night family movie. Thanks for the recommendation, Rissi!
It was cute. Hope if you saw it you found it fun. Zooey was hilarious in New Girl and while I think I’ve seen Charlie in something, I cannot remember what it was!
My husband and I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it! Thanks for all your hard work on your blog with all your reviews and recommendations, Rissi! Your blog is such a fantastic resource!
